I recently bought the Hella FF75 driving lights, and was wondering if I really have to use the relay provided? I have had lights previously installed and just hooked them up through the battery and grounded them. Is this wrong or bad? thanks!

The problem with a non-relay setup is you have all of the amperage traveling though your switch on the dash board. If the power draw from the Hella's exceeds the rated capacity of the toggle - you can have an overheated switch and possible fire.

Another reason for worry is the added leght of the power wire: If it isn't secured properly or protected it can rub, chaffed and even split causing a potental for a short. This probably won't happen - but if the powerwire was only ran to a relay under hood.... this possibility is almost eliminated.

With all of that being said - as long as your switch isn't under rated for your current draw, I wouldn't worry too much about it
