Post subject:  Rear Glass

Hi folks,

When have my dog in the back of my '06 Liberty I like to open the back glass for him while we're riding. The problem is that all the interior lights stay on in the vehicle while the glass is open. This is easily overcome in the daytime by simply turning the lights off on the signal lever, but at night it's a pain.

My question is this; does anyone know of a way to disconnect the switch that turns the lights on when the glass is open? I realize the implications that may result such as the glass open warning light no longer working, but I'm not too concerned about that as long as the rear defrost and wipers still function. Also, before someone warns me about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning...I'm well aware and would only do this while traveling at highway speeds.

'06 Liberty Sport.

Thanks for your help.

The trick is to push the latch back in once you pop the glass open. That turns the light back off

note: I do not think driving with the back glass open is a good idea but this topic has been debated already so let's leave it be.

Thanks I'll try that.

Just curious, do you not like the idea of driving with the glass open because of the carbon monoxide danger, or is there another reason?

I believe it's because of the carbon monoxide & other exhaust gasses coming into the jeep threw the rear glass if it's open

I could see that being an issue in stop-and-go traffic, but when the vehicle is moving it seems logical to me that the exhaust fumes wouldn't be able to enter the vehicle.

Like I said...I was just curious. It seems to me that the warning is only there to protect the stupid from suffocating themselves while sitting in traffic with the glass open.

If you drive in the rain, the rear window gets splashed. That tells you that air flow curves up to the window.

on the 03's you can push the lens of the light in the rear and it will shut off all the lights when the window is open.

Plenty of other vehicles have rear windows that open while driving, and I find it hard to believe that the airflow on those vehicles is THAT much different.

I would be more worried about that flipper glass just flopping around open. Seems like it would be prone to breaking?

If none of the "easy" solutions work, what I would do is find out which sensor checks to see that it's open and throw in a bypass switch. I assume a connection is either made or broken when that flipper is closed, and I imagine you can fake it with a little toggle switch fairly easily. But try clicking the rear light first, maybe that will just turn off the light?
