Well I will say this: with my Hella 500s I can light up a stop sign 1/2 mile away (or better). I'll try to make some comparison photos this weekend and post them up; I just have to find a decent stretch of road without a lot of traffic, but if I go out after midnight so that shouldn't be too hard to do

is it really necessary to use a relay for hella lights? i just attached the wire straight to the battery and the other end to the lights. i grounded it with factory screws under the hood, and then continued onto the switch. is this wrong? |

If you're using a switch to control the lights then a relay isn't necessary, you would only need to use one if you wanted to have them come on with the high-beams. |

make sure your switch is rated for the current draw of the Hellas. (the reason you would use a relay in the fist place). else its going to get hella hot.. and will be hella smokey in your libby., |

I have a set of Hella 500s mounted on top of my bumper and wired them so that they come on only with the high beams. I found the factory high beams to be inadequate by themselves...compared to what I was used to with past cars. The Hellas are great lights for the price. I would agree that you should use the relay even if you are mounting a switch inside the cabin. Chances are that you would be fine not doing it that way, but you might as well do it right. The kit comes with everything you need to do it that way. Like gopherbeats said above, make sure your switch is rated for the current needed if you do not use the relay. I think the switch provided in the Hella kit was meant to be used with the relay.....so check it before you run the full load of both lights through it. You may need to buy another switch. |

The other nice thing about using a relay is that you can use a thick wire for the lights, and a much thinner wire and smaller switch for the control, which makes it easier to mount in the cabin, rather than having finger-thick wires snaking around. |

OK, here are some pics. I took these tonight on a lightly-traveled road here in the Mesa area. All three images were 20 second exposures at f/11. 
This is a crop of the central portion of all three shots, so you can really see the difference in light output as you get further away:

Hellas are stupid-bright. Here's the shot of my 75s, which are smaller and not as bright as the 500s. 
The quality sucks, but this is the difference, and you'll see mroe because the 500s are brighter... High beams

ya i got some ff75's, and am saving up for some 500's. i will be making a mount to screw into the renegade foglights so i can mount my fogs, ff75's, and soon 500's! |

I would not recommend running the power for the lights directly through the switch, I would personally use a relay |

If you are want to wire the Hellas to come on with your hi-beams, then use the provided wire tap to attach the green wire to the hi-beam wire on the drivers side (makes running the wires easier to do it on the drivers side) then run the green wire either to the switch or directly to terminal 86 on the relay. If you want the Hellas available whenever you have power to the lights, connect the green wire to the parking lamp and run it thru the switch. If you want to have the ability to turn on the Hellas whenever you think you need them, connect the green wire directly to a power terminal and run it thru the switch*. For an '03 Liberty, the proper wires to connect to are: hi-beam = light green with brown stripe (lg/br) parking light = black with yellow stripe (bk/yl) Not sure if the '05s are the same way but I can't see why they would have changed it. If you need any more detailed instructions PM me and I'll help you out. * = LEGAL DISCLAIMER: connecting driving lights so that they can come on when the hi-beams are not on could be a violation of local and/or state ordinances/laws. I'm not saying that you shouldn't do it, but if you do and a cop wants to write you a ticket for it, remember that you have been warned

just ordered my lights off of amazon! I only paid 3.50 for them!!! they should be here in 5-9 days because I opted for the free super saver shipping. then the mounting bracket process will really begin! |

if i don't want to connect the wires to the driving lights, how can i still use the relay? do i connect both blue wires form the 500's and attach them to the relay? |
