for some reason, the dash light works backwards. when in 2wd it lights up Part Time. in 4hi the light goes out. the 4 wheel drive system works just fine, as does the 4lo light.

???

Is it possible the 2WD/4WD lightswitch sensor is reversed?

Has it always been like this?

Hey OBX,
Seems to be a "common" problem, well maybe not super common, but a known issue. Seems to be the transfer case postion sensor goes out. Mine did the same about a year ago. Strangely after Moab '07 it fixed it's self, only to break again a few months later. In the last month though, the light totally went out. Done some searching on it on here and KJ Country, others have had the same problem. One guy replaced the switch, but I think that's about it. Local dealer want's $75 for the switch. Might ask them how much more the install is. The transmission switch on my 45 went out this summer and it was about $30 install on top of the $75 part.

As far as ill affects that it will have on the transfer case...your guess is as good as mine. Like I said, been a year plus and haven't noticed any problems with the t-case. Hope that helps a bit.

later, mike

ps what year is your KJ, mines a '02

It's a 2003 with a 5 speed. It has never been apart & there are other issues with the vehicle.

If someone DOES replace this unit, It's make a great FAQ. I'm sure many more owners will need it as our Lib's age.

my 03 sport automatic does the same thing and it's fine..

After playing around at the Badlands in Indiana my part time light decided to reverse itself.. I asked around on the forum and all the seasoned vets said it was a sensor... not a big deal.
I haven't had any problems shifting into 4parttime,4hi, or 4lo since the sensor has been reversed.
too poor to care right now...

Mine went out over a year ago and I finally replaced it. It was a very simple task. The two issues I had were getting the wire off the sensor and finding a socket big enough to get it off. after that it was $65 for the sensor and the problem is fixed.
