I've been trying to come up with a solution for a video display for onboard carputer. I have a sunroof so the roof mount is out (I don't know if enough room for it to work). I was also thinking of doing a custom install and removing the two vents above the stock stereo, but living in Cali I need my AC! So there is another option...

Relocate the stock stereo into the center console and place a motorized, retractable 7" LCD video monitor where the stock stereo was. It seems straight forward enough, just clip the harness and extend it. Add an antennae extension (is the factory connector standard or "special").

I have the stereo controls already on the steering wheel so reaching volume and channels is not an issue.

Ideas, thoughts, suggestions for adding a video display?

Is an in-dash 7 or so inch monitor/cd player out of the question? Depending on what all you want to do with it, one of those might be something to look at.

Just an idea... but if you're thinking of going a custom angle, perhaps you could change the instrument cluster (HVAC controls) and open up some space right in the same area as where the din & a half is now. Not sure what kind of an undertaking this may be, but if you could manage it, it would be nice look and convenient to have everything right there in front of you. Perhaps the controls out of another model Jeep would work (plug & play) without much hassle...?
Good luck and post pics when you get 'er done, I'd love to see it. I'm still dreaming about installing an 8" touchscreen and an EPIA based system. Hard to do w/ MN winters.

Sometimes the simplest solution is the most elegant, but I do like my steering wheel controls. Price-wise that is the way to go.

I've been itching sometime to do this, but the dollar cost is what has driven me so far for a solution. I'll get some quotes on the custom route. Personally I know this will look better, but also looks good to the bad guys who might want to aquire it. If I do go this route it will either be a 10-12 inch monitor.

I saw on crutchfield where they have an adapter that translates factory steering wheel controls to an IR beam for use with head units that have infared remotes.

I have actuallt see an aftermarket HU mounted in the B Pillar I believe it is instead of having an "O crud" handle. It was done on a Ford Explorer Sporttrac. If your interested in that, I can try and find a link for you from the ST website I used to frequent.

One of these with an in-dash monitor gets my vote.
