Hey guys, I was curious if anyone here has done a Double DIN install? The factory puts in a 1.5 DIN and I wanna change it to a Double DIN. I have two photos of a guy who put in a Mac Mini into the dash with the LCD screen, while I dont want to do this I do want to install the Pioneer AVIC F900BT which is a Double DIN reciever.

I realize this will mean cutting, sanding and modding the Bezel some and possibly using some bondo, (Unless someone here knows of a site you can buy a double DIN bezel!) but anyways I was hoping someone here has done it and can give some insight as to what I'm up against and also might have some pics to show off! Thanks!

yes you are going to have to custom make the double din fit. might have some light sheetmetal work to do to be able to get some strength behind it and make a custom mounting kit to mount the double din or modify an existing aftermarket double din mounting kit. i believe kitty hair is a suitable bondo as it has fiberglass in it too as regular bondo will crack over time. i personally have not seen an aftermarket double din kit for the liberty and i wish there was. this is best done by a car audio specialist with experience in custom work.

Yeah Modding is right. I was going to go with one of Alpines Double Dins, but instead I went and got the Alpine CDA-9886. It is an awesome HU. Thanks to all the advice here from members who told me to go with Alpine.

That single DIN unit seems cool, I had one very similar in my 96' XJ, and loved it, But now I want to have a touch screen (Non flip up which is why I have to go double din), with GPS nav capabilities, iPod connection, and I think the SD card is Kick @$$, since it can handle up to 16GB and can take video files and MP3/WAV's! I talked to Car Toys about it and they say they can make it happen for $500.00 (Obviously just the modifications and labor) and the unit I would buy new, I've seen them on ebay selling for new at about $500-600 which is a bargain since they run retail at most stores for $1500! I figured and bugeted about $1000 for this upgrade, I just wish they had done Double DIN in the 1st place.

I know I'm a little late to reply to this, but it is possible to fit a double din. I personally have a Pioneer AVICZ110 in mine, all I had to do was a little cutting. Turned out pretty good. I'm about to do my full stereo install next week so I'll get some pictures of it for everyone.

Nice Work ThrillHouse!
I have a Pioneer F700BT, same size as your unit I want to install. Did you cut up the original bezel ? or create a new one ?

Great song playing thrill! Looks nice might look into doing this instead of a factory navigation off ebay.

The F700BT is the same size, no double din will fit without some cutting. Double dins are too tall and the factory radio is much wider than any aftermarket. I simply cut a little above and below the radio opening and filled in the sides with some abs plastic and bondo. Do keep in mind that there is also some minor cutting to do behind the radio, but it's all just plastic. Also remove the metal radio bracket because all it does is takes up space and gets in the way. As far as mounting the radio I just used some side brackets from a Ford double din dash kit and used the factory screws and screw holes with some large washers. And here are some pictures of the install without the bezel and of the bezel itself.

Hey man, thanks for the great "write-up" I've taken the dash apart and I know there is so much room back there, and you just proved it does, lol. The pictures help a lot.

Hey thrill house are you still around these parts? I was wondering if you happened to remember which ford double din brackets you used to mount the stereo, I have been searching high and low for those similar looking brackets and have come up empty. I have a 2007 Jeep liberty limited and have already ordered a second radio/ac trim to modify and have some good luck with bondo and fiberglass modding in the past. I am just wondering about that bracket though... Please let me know if you have any pics of it or of the bracket before you installed it, that would be awesome...That is if you still have the jeep!!!

Thanks

Thomas

New Piece should male it easier for all of us wanting to make this jump.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Jeep-Liberty-20 ... 5af5afeef6

Disclaimer: I haven't seen or used it yet. It also comes in Mossy Oak Camo.
I can tell you I was quoted $1200.00 to have one fabbed up in fiberglass. So for $ 135.00 I'll try it.

Did you ever get a chance to try out the double din? I'm interested in it too.

I ordered mine today. I went with the black. I used to work at a vinyl wrap/window tinting place, so I can always do my own if I decided to. Im fond of wetlands type camo anyways. Im using my pioneer dbl din avh-8600bt iirc. I'll make sure I post some pics as well

I realize no one has posted on here for awhile, but I recently bought a Pioneer AVH-X3600BHS double din radio for my '03 Jeep Liberty limited. I also bought an after market double din bezel from amazon along with the install kit Pioneer recommends. Am I the only one that's managed to find a double din bezel for a Liberty without having to mod one??

I think the guy selling the Double-DIN bezels just started offering them around the first of this year. :)
