Hey guys. I just treated myself to a much needed mod for Christmas...a Cobra 25 NW Classic CB radio! :D I now have to order an antenna and mounting kit to go along with. I have been eyeing the Firestik II antenna and the 3-way mounting bracket kit that comes with all necessary cables and mounting acessories as well as some free stuff. I just want to check and see if anyone has used this kit and enjoys it. For almost $50 it seems to be a reasonable price for all the things you get. Feedback would be awesome and recommendations for other things such as alternative antenna kits or tips for installation would be cool too...my first CB install ever...fingers crossed  Thanks!

I don't have experience with that cb, but I did have a Firestik antenna that worked great (until it fell off and got ran over a lot). Tip number one: Check to make sure your antenna is attached tightly. Tip number two: I ran the positive wire to an "add a circuit" and the negative to an existing hole under the steering column. Worked out perfect and there was no drilling or messing with the battery. The add a circuit on mine is sharing a fuse spot with the radio so I don't have to worry about leaving the cb on accidentaly.

Great step getting a cb, makes the trails and road trips sooo much better.

i have the firestick kit you are talking about. i originally tried to modify the bracket that comes with the kit to bolt up to one of the upper bolts that holds the spare tire rack on. just wasnt enough room for what i wanted to do so i fabbed a different bracket to fit between the spare and the rear door. you could probably use the mount, but i am not sure where you would mount it.

the antenna, coax, and mounting stud are all quality items (which is why i always buy firestick equipment). i have a quick release stud because i dont run with the antenna on unless i am on the trail so i am not using the coil that comes with the kit but it seems to be a nice piece as well

Kilby has (? check) Image
antenna mounts for about $70. Doesn't come with the quick disconnect you see. You have to call them and ask for the "KJ spare tire antenna mount".

Thanks so much guys...I like the spare tire mounting kit, but mine is on the roof and not on the swing-gate.

Thanks for the help and pics. Pics are much better than trying to describe something. Thanks again!

rocketjockey: What length antenna is that?? 102"?? If so do you have any shots of it tied down to the roof?

Allscan, I'm not sure how rocketjockey secured his antenna but here is a shot of my set-up:
Image
Went to Wal-mart and bought a bag of mini bungees. Drilled a hole in the roof rail and put a screw in it, then CAREFULLY bent the hooks on the bungee around the screw and the end of the antenna. I'll still replace the antenna with my 4' firestik on rough trails, but so far this has held up to a lot worse than I would have thought.

allscan,
Yes it is 102" I have not found a "good" method of holding the antenna down; currently I use the cheap method... rubber bands. I just take 2 (for a longer length) and attach one end to the antenna wrap around the roof rack and then attach the other end back to the antenna. The biggest problem is the rubber bands only last about a month. I like corwyyn method but generally metal against the antenna is bad. I had people tell me to try zip-ties and just cut it when I need it up.

good luck

Yes, metal against the antenna would be bad if it was grounding the antenna to the body - thats why I chose the bungee cord.

Well, I was using the Radio Shack model, but have since gone back to my 4' Firestik. The 102" whip was just a bit too wild when I was out wheeling, even with the bungee cord holding it down. The Firestik on a spring is much more tame.
