ok.. me and brpn#2 are going to probably get a couple of CB units for our KJs.. we live in the NC mountains and was wondering you guys that are CB enthusiasts.. give us some hints and tips on which brand you would suggest and which antenna.. mounts.. etc.. I havent used CB radio in years.. my dad used to have base unit 25+yrs ago and he had a CB in every car/truck he owned.. i even used to have my own nickname back when i was 10 when we went on long road trips with the RV. but i have no idea what is out there now and which is the best.. etc.. give us some hints and point us in the right direction for something that will work good in our mountain area.. on trails and such.. |

There have been several topics regarding this you may want to look at. But basically it comes down to preference. The Cobra 75 WX seems to be a popular choice as it can be easily mounted (and hidded) and is easy to use. Firestik fiberglass antennas also seem to be a popular choice. It really all comes down to what features you want and how big you want th unit to be. |

Unfortunately, there is no way to kow how well a CB will work in a given situation. All you can do is tune it. Some days you might could talk across the country, others you might be lucky to get across the street. Really the only differences between CBs is how much power they have and what additional features they come with. For example: some you can get the weather stations with, some have a PA function, some have different meters built in, some will scan all channels, etc. As for antennas, you can get a fiberglass or steel whip in different lengths. They essentially all work about the same, provided you can get the SWR right. In my experience, permanent mounts (to the body, not glass) work better than magnet mounts. I would recommend the Cobra 75 WX-ST previously mentioned, as it's a good basic CB that you can easily remove if needed. As for antenna, you first have to decide if you want to permanently mount it or not. If you do, I recommend a Firestik II, or a full 102" steel whip (which is the best you can get). As for mounting locations, you want to make sure at least 2/3 of the antenna is above the highest part of the roof (including a roof rack, etc.). So, where you decide to mount your antenna, determines what length you should get. I have a 5' Firestik II mounted to the rear swing gate door jamb above the tail lights. I know there are a couple different topics about antenna mounting locations you may want to look at to get a better idea of what others have done. It's the antenna and mounting that determine performance more than the CB. Hope I was able to help. |
