whip antennas

I got sick of having my 4' fiberglass mounted to my spare tire, and took it off. Was thinking about getting something like the wilson magnetic whip, probably a 38" whip and tossing it on the roof, than tieing the end of the whip down. My worry is with the whip like that, would it effect my reception at all?

nah

probably get better reception with a magnetic mount 24" metal whip on the roof than a 4' off the spare

should have no problems what so ever with a 36" (which is what i think you meant) just make sure it's a beefy mag and has some felt or something to protect the paint

I'm looking at a wilson, and the site actually advertises it at 38", maybe its a typo on there end haha. It's a 10oz magnetic, not too beefy but I would think it should hold up. So do you think It would be weird if I tie off the end of that so it's not so high when going around town?

Magnet is strongggg. had my finger under it while I was puttin it on my roof, pinched the eff outta my finger.
Get good reception. Everyone can hear me clearly on the trail and no squealing.

no issues with it blowing off on the highway, trees on a trail ripping it off, or a low parking garage pulling it off? Do you have yours straight up or tied down?

Never been ripped off. Gone under like 7' clearances and it hasn't been ripped off yet.
High speeds it does fine. Not sure about the trail. I always take it off and put it on my tailgate on trails. I don't want to risk it getting ripped off and destroyed the forest.

I got it mounted straight up. about 6-7 inches from the rear.

how do you mount it on your tail gate?

Take it off the roof, stick on the tail gate so the antenna goes towards the back. Just run the cable through the rear window, shut the window and you're good to go. Its what I do everytime.

I just can't picture this. So you put the magnet on the tail gate, do you have a right angle adapter or something to keep the antenna pointing straight up? You got any pictures?

The Wilson 1000 is a fantastic antenna. It blows the K40 out of the water very time if you ask me. I had one for many years and they don't move if you don't want them to. The best part is that the coil unscrews from the mount, so it's really easy to dismount if you feel there is a chance it could get stolen. It also comes with a tight fitting cap to place over the connector on the mount to protect it from the weather while the coil is off. You'll love that antenna!

was actually looking at the lil wil not the wilson 1000. Took a look at the 1000 but the cost scared me away, for what I need, that's just too much money.

Radio waves are polarized. A vertical antenna will send out vertical waves and a horizontal antenna will send out horizontal waves. Most CB antennas are set up vertically so having the antenna mounted vertical is best for transmit and reception with other radios with vertical mounted antennas. At the short distances between vehicles on trail rides it doesn't make a whole lot of difference. However, you might want to check your Standing Wave Ratio (SWR) if you tie down the top end of the antenna. If the SWR gets too high you can burn out the final drivers in your radio on transmission. Having the antenna parallel to the rooftop may prove to have too high SWR's. Just my :2cents:

however, as long as the SWR is ok, all you have to deal with is polarization that would affect performance versus communicating with the opposite polarization but in short distance as he said wouldn't make much difference at all

a 36-38" whip ontop would be just under 9' overall, my 4' is about 7" from the roof, and rubs on 10'8" clearances

for the most part any speed over 35 mph the whips tend to lean to the rear about 25-30 degrees

the only thing ive ever hit with mine was the phone line at my moms house which is lower than required by regulations due to crappy phone guys rigging the line after it got knocked down, and any overhang lower than 10'9" at drive throughs/parking garages

I wouldn't bother using a tie to hold it back but you could

You can kinda see here where its mounted. It sticks straight out horizontally. The cable runs through the rear glass and I just shut the rear glass on the cable and I'm good to go.

Oh, And I can unscrew the antenna from the mount if I need a lower clearance.
