Any others around here have a dealer installed Trailer Wiring harness that was installed "propperly" so that the part of the harness that runs towards the front of the vehicle winds up resting on the catalytic converter??

I bought my 09 this past Oct, new, and had the harness installed with the hitch when I bought the vehicle. I just purchased a small camper and was tracing the wires so I could install the Brake controller. To my suprise, I found that the wiring harness was pretty much hung over top of the catalytic converter and up into the engine compartment, instead of being tucked neatly and attached to something. The harness had melted from hitting the exhaust.

I went to the dealer, they refused to replace the entire harness. They cut out the bad, and soldered in new wires, re-wrapped it tucked and secured it properly. They service manager and technician told me the harness was installed according to the instructions and the chrysler woudl not reimburse them for the harness. The harness is supposed to be held taught up and away from the exhaust by keeping it tight at both ends....mind you, the wire is attached to nothing behind the catalytic convertor, nor up in the engine compartment.

The Service manager also mentioned, that this was not the first time they had to do this repair. I was just curious if any others out there have had the same problem.

Thanks

John

I installed the harness myself mine it is close but not hitting or touching the cat. I have thought about some way to protect it from the heat but for now, I keep an eye on it. That reminds me I better go check it.

The KJ runs INSIDE not the outside. I woul dlike ot have a look at the install manual and see if they were actualy supposed to run it inside.

I looked it up, wow what a freaking mess. http://site.justforjeeps.com/guide/82210642.pdf

Thanks, as crapy as it is, at least I know I am not alone, and that they were not B.S. ing me.

When they repaired it, the guy tucked the wire under the heatshield that is attached to the underside of the floorboards. It is tucked up under there pretty much up through and into the engine compartment, so now it is pretty safe.

You may want to consider doing the same to yours.

It was just very frustrating having a brand new vehicle....7000 miles today, and having something like that needing to be spliced and repaired. I wanted to do the install myself, but of course they throw the old, YOU WILL VOID your warrantee in your face. With the lifetime warrantee on the powertrain, i did not want to chance it. So spent the $1000 for the hitch harness and install.

make yourself familar with the Magnuson Moss Act. I installed mine both times and the dealer has never been wise.
