We own a 06 Liberty CRD, with the factory tow package. The truck is rated to tow 5,000 lbs. It tows our 4,500 lb camping trailer just fine. The short wheelbase makes passing vehicles cause a little dance, but it is something we can live with. The only problem we encountered was installing the brake controller. The truck was supposed to be wired at the factory, but the 7 way was a dummy install. We had to hard wire the brake controller from the unit to the 7 way. We have gone camping 6 weekends and average 19 mpg towing. My other vehicle is an 06 Titan. I get about 10 mpg towing with that. It's a no brain er. Besides, I love the reaction we get when people in the campground look at the little CRD and the big 24 ft. camper. Some have even asked if we tow the camper with THAT little truck? I just smile and say "It's a diesel." ![]() |

I hope you didn't hardwire the entire brake controller from front to rear. The wire for "brake" is under the dash. It's labeled. The other signal wire is just a splice into the brake connector above the pedal switch. It's fairly straightforward. Yes, these rigs will tow like champs. The engine, transmission, suspension, etc. are all heavier duty than the gas models. Only the wheelbase holds them back. And the wheelbase isn't all that awful, it's just not that great either. Time your time and keep your speed down and you can tow whatever you want with it. ![]() |
