2004 Liberty Limited with 3.7K

I noticed there is a spot for a relay on the interior fuse panel that if for daytime running lights. Are daytime running lights as simple as adding that relay? If so, what are the specs of the relay I need?

not quite that simple, you have to remove the headlight relay, install the drl relay and then take it to the dealership and have them use the scantool and cut them on. (change the country from US to Canada)

Only one way to find out. I borrowed one of the relays from under the hood and plugged it into my 06 kj and drl's came on as soon as I turned the key. When I turned on the headlights on they went to full power.

Glad you did that, I was thinking about doing that as well. I have read that the DRL relay is special because it is on all the time and a normal relay will overheat eventually. I know the autozone here in brooklyn carries the DRL Relay $60.

Not long after I bought my CRD new I took it in for a recall. I asked the dealer about DRLs and they indicated it would be next to impossible to get them...and you would expect those folks to know before any one else, so that's a bit annoying. I knew fleet purchasers could get the option so it couldn't be that hard.

If you don't mind, share the part number of that relay when you get it. I've been drinking around for six years with the foglights on for the purpose of having DRLs.

I can't speak to the longevity of the relay or how bad it may or may not overheat since I didn't leave it in any longer than to just see if it works, but if you find a relay from anything that would be on a majority of the time I would expect that it should be ok

i'm going to have to call shenanigans on the relay being any more special than the regular headlight relay, assuming they're pin and size compatible. otherwise those of us who drive with our headlights manually turned on at all times would be running into problems.

I don't know, but since DRLs run a bit dimmer, it would seem that they would be at a reduced voltage. Any chance the relay has to absorb some of that and run inherently hotter? ...just tossing this out there.

ok. so apparently the DRL relay is indeed a special one. it's a solid state relay, and it's presence means the high beam relay is removed. DRL is achieved by lighting the high beam filament at reduced power, which explains why a solid state relay is needed.

be nice to see the part number for the relay. I'm working on finding that now.

DAYTIME RUNNING LAMP RELAY
DESCRIPTION
The Daytime Running Lamp (DRL) relay (1) is a solid
state relay that is used only on vehicles manufactured
for sale in Canada. The DRL relay is installed in the
Junction Block (JB) on the driver side outboard end of
the instrument panel. Vehicles equipped with this relay
do not have a headlamp high beam relay installed in
the JB.
The DRL relay features a die cast aluminum housing that serves to contain the solid state circuitry of the relay as
well as to perform as a heat sink (2). Potting material (3) fills the base of the housing to enclose and protect the
circuitry.
Four male spade terminals (4) exit the base of the relay housing through the potting material to connect the relay
to the vehicle electrical system. These terminals are laid out in a footprint that is similar to that of a conventional
International Standards Organization (ISO) relay; however, a standard ISO relay must never be installed in place of
the DRL relay.
The DRL relay cannot be adjusted or repaired and, if inoperative or damaged, it must be replaced with a new unit.

I have DRL and hate them. I'd rather drive around with the fogs on.

Yes I realize I am reviving a 6 year old post, but having recently acquired a 2007 Liberty, I'm now starting to tinker. Since this is a vehicle that my daughters primarily drive, I'm very interested in safety and while i know the arguments against DRLs (mostly form motorcycle enthusiasts), it seems like more than 50% of the cars on the road today are running with DRLs. I recently purchased the oem solid state relay for the DRL socket left side of dash, installed and removed the high beam relay. Unfortunately no DRLs but the high beams still work when switched on. Guess the BCM needs to be programmed for Canada for the DRL function to work as others have mentioned. I am surprised that the high beam function works without the high beam relay and without the reprogramming. Makes me wonder why the even bothered to have two separate sockets when apparently the solid state relay in the DRL socket takes over the high beam relay function. Seems like from a manufacturing standpoint would have been a lot simpler to have one relay and then simply program the DRL function in the BCM. Very strange to me.
