This is elsewhere on the site, but I just wanted to put it separately so It would be easier to read, understand and find.

This is how to set up a three (3) position switch.
One is to have the lights come on automatically when triggered by another power source, ie: reverse lights/parking lights.
Two is off all the time
Three is turn them on independently.

    On the Switch
  • One side goes to fused power
  • Middle goes to trigger post 86 on relay
  • Other side goes to what you want to tap into (ie: reverse lights)

    On the Relay
  • 30 goes to fused 12v power
  • 86 goes to middle terminal on switch
  • 85 goes to a ground
  • 87 goes to Aux Lights


This is the correct Diagram to use with the wires going to where I just mentioned.

Finally... someone who can help me with my switch pandemic...
I want to have this made possible

Interior lights on one

Interior + exterior (puddle lights) on the other

exterior (puddle lights) on another.

Is this possible?

I thought of using an ON-OFF-ON switch just not sure if i need SPDT or DPDT or how to wire it.

HELP would be much appreciated!

Everything is the same.

One side of switch goes to an interior light bulb.
Your exterior lights go to post 87.

When you turn your interior lights on via the left stalk, and the switch is in the up position, your exterior lights will come on as well.
When the switch is in the middle position and you turn your interior lights on, the exterior lights will not come on.
When you flip the switch to the down position, only your exterior lights will come on.

ok I know I am stupid, but I am visual...
Can you do a quick drawing of what I am to do? which light to hook to which pole and the relay as well.

I really appreciate it. while trying the first time, i blew 5 fueses. don't want to go through that again.

Make sure you have an ON-OFF-ON switch.

Its the same diagram I have in the first post.

One side of switch goes to an interior light bulb wire (or under the footwell where the light is) to act as a trigger to turn on the exterior lights.
The power wire for your exterior lights go to post 87.

It can be any 4 or 5 pin relay. Every auto parts store will have them, even Walmart.

Okay... so the fused 12v would be my in-cab lights on both where it says Fused(+) 12v? I have those hooked together and hooked to the in-cab lights.

I am having problems.
I have the II on switch hooked up to parking lights fuse so when left toggle for parking is rotated, the exteriors will come on with the switch in down position.

I can not get the in-cab lights work with the switch... i.e. when i rotate the toggle on for in-cab lights, it does nothing to the exterior lights.

I need help!!! I was very close.

Close, but not really, lol.

The 12v+ is a power source other than the lights you want to illuminate.
The in cabin lights have to be hooked up to the II part of the switch.
Your puddle lights have to be hooked up to the 87 terminal on the relay.

In this scenario, to turn on the exterior lights by themselves, flip the switch to I.
to turn on the interior lights by themselves, have the switch in the 0 position, and do as you would normally do and rotate the stalk on the left side.
For the exterior lights to turn on automatically with the interior lights, you would have the switch in the II position, then rotate the stalk to turn on the interior lights, and the exterior lights will illuminate as well.

what's a good 12v source that is on all the time? that is in the fuse paneL?

On my 2007, Cavity 16 is the rear 12v power plug (20AMP Yellow).
That would be a fine place to power the switch.
I'm not sure which kind of lights you are trying to illuminate, but the power to the relay is what is powering your aftermarket lights, if they are high wattage, and not LEDs this should not be a permanent source for power to the relay.
That would be good to test it out until you can create a better power source.

okay so i have it as follows I hooked to 16 fuse, 0 to 86 middle terminal, and II to fuse 3.
Still nothing going on with the relay.
