CB QUESTION

ive got a cobra cb ithink its a 75, a diesel antenna which i mounted to the bumper. the cb seems to receive fine but when i go to talk my buddy withnthe same kind of cb and antenna cant hear me. i can hear him loud and clear. heres the funny part we swapped antennas and same problem. then with the antenna off he can hear me. wtf

Sounds to me like you might have a short in the antenna mount. Take it to a local CB shop and ask them to tune the SWR on the antenna (about $10 to $15). I would also make sure you have a good coax cable connecting everything.

You might also check the antenna mount to see if ti has a good ground. If you drilled thru the plastic to mount your antenna you might not have hit enough metal to ground the mount.

i didnt know that the antenna had to be grounded. its mounted just below the taillight. what are my options?? i rather not move it since there is 4 holes through it

If you could provide some more details on how you mounted it we might be able to figure something out. The ground is nescessary since the vehicle body acts as part of the system. When you remove the antenna from the mount the coax is basically acting as a receive antenna, and you can transmit but the SWR is high. If you continued to transmit for extended periods you would most likely burn out the transmit side of your CB and possibly kill the entire radio. Most people are leary of drilling the sheet metal on their new vehicles, but it is the best way to ensure a good ground. I bit the bullet and drilled the drivers side fender so I could put a ball mount for my antennas:

First thing, NEVER key up your mic with out an ant on there, you are going to fry your radio if you do, second, NEVER key that baby up with out it being grounded right. Your radio and your ant have to be grounded or you wont talk or listen.

If you havent already done great damage to the radio take it down to a CB shop / Truck Stop wherever the "old timer" Cb guys are and have them tune the SWRs on that thing. Also ga ahead and buy new coax for it, coax is your friend and you dont want to get bad coax like having a bad friend. Try making a mount on your spare tire rack, use some old shelving angle iron, like the kind that has the oblong holes in it to adjust the shelves, Your going to need to take the rack off and make sure there isnt anything shorting it out either. Grounding is the #1 thing always screwed up on a bad CB. And dont worry about getting a really expensive CB just get a GOOD antenna, its worth every penny to get an awsome antenna. CB's only can transmit so much power and they are all almost the same from factory and to be honest you dont need power to talk to your buddy thats 100 yards behind you on a trail.

i'd really rather not drill through the body. what if i mounted on the roof rack that metal and its at a high pointof the vehicle. would that work??

Kilby has the spare tire mount, but they are out of stock and don't seem to really want to make anymore, Give them a call and send them a email requesting one.

I talked to them twice now 2 weeks apart and get the same response, out of stock looking for some one to manufacter them, 2 or 3 weeks.

It would work, altough you might have to attach a small ground strap from the rail to the roof (you could probably do that inside the plastic end caps on the rails). If you could supply details, or even better, photos of your mount it would help. You may be able to pull the plastic trim piece off, put a plate on the inside of where your antenna is mounted and ground that to the body without anything showing. I'm travelling this weekend so I won't be around a computer to check in, but I'm sure there are some other people who might be able to help out.

i tried that and still no dramatic improvement. i had the antenna mounted on the flatest part of the bumper just below the right taillight. i tried the roof rack and still no dramatic improvement. its really starting to iritate me. i then tried to attach it to the sapre tire mouning bracket against the body and still nothing. the main reason i mounted it there is because i wanna be able to have the ability to keep the back window open sometimes. otherwise i would mount it on the spare tire carrier. any other suggestion???
