As my kids get bigger and I start visiting more places with kinder running about near the tailgate, I've started considering a rear-view camera setup for piece of mind (and also to some degree for towing and tangentially off-road use). From what I've seen, the factory auto-dim mirror is OEMed from gentex, who also makes a similar model with a 16X9 LCD overlay model, a GENK332:

There are numerous CCD and CMOS camera options, obviously, and I haven't ripped apart the factory mirror to look at the pinouts and so forth, but has anyone attempted this kind of thing and if so, would you mind sharing your experiences? I'd like to gauge level of effort before diving off the deep end on the project.

Dan

That's a pretty nifty system. I'm looking to go low-impact, though. At some point later, I may add the capability of doing something else with the video, but for now, the integrated rear-view seems nice since it's there when you're using it and not there when you don't need it. It has some kind of reverse trigger (possibly from the same signal from the transmission control that's used for other things) and that could be made to be switch-activated (for watching someone hook up a boat while parked on a ramp or something...).

Ultimately, leaving as much factory in place would be good. I like the factory head unit and sat-radio fine. They work and replacing them is both expensive and potentially problematic if I don't need to.

Yep, that's pretty much exactly what I'm looking for. I had no idea ARB made one. Looks very similar to the JEEP OEM manufacturer's but obviously already integrated with camera and so-forth.

Thanks!
Dan

P.S. I checked into the factor wiring and there's already a reverse-trigger pin going to the overhead console and factory rear-view camera location
