I can't believe it. I get home from 5 days away, drive from the airport park in the driveway. Now the CRD won't start. I have battery, I mean everything functions normally, I go to start it and NOTHING happens, no clickin, nothing.

All the fuses appear to be fine, we've had no rain overnight the thing is just not cranking.

I reset everything by taking the negative off the battery for 5 min. Still nothing. Have the battery on a charger now will wait a few.

Any other suggestions?

Stranded.... in the driveway

Some basic tips here:
http://autorepair.about.com/od/troubles ... -start.htm

If these don't help, get the wiring diagram and start checking voltages around the starter relay, ignition switch, and starter. You might need someone to turn the ignition switch when you test.

I looked through all of these, all of these are fine.

lights cycle through
, fan, radio cut out when key is in start position
tried in Park and Neutral
reseated all the fuses, just haven't banged on the starter yet.

I've seen this happen before on other vehicles with an automatic transmission and a very common cause is a bad transmission position sensor. When they fail the usual failure mode is one that "tells" the ignition system the transmission is in gear in which case when you turn the key everything works but no crank up related sounds not even a click. Don't offhand know where this switch is on the CRD but that's one of the first things I'd look at. If it's the same switch that turns on the 4wd lights in the dash it's on the top of the transmission and best accessed by removal of the center console. If you determine that's the switch pm or email me and I'll send center console removal instructions I recently found on a different forum.

Rattle the shifter before you tear it all apart. Dirt and other stuff gets into switches and can cause a malfunction.
I am sure it would not break your EGO if the dirt fell out and it worked, worth the risk.

When you turn the key to start does the engine turn over? If it does not turn over and
the radio goes off when you turn the key to start. It may be the starter drawing too much current or the battery not able to put out enough power to actually crank the engine. Check the voltage at the battery when attempting to start the engine. If it goes below 11 volts when you try to start then I suspect it is either a bad battery or starter.

Mine will occasionally do this... I stroke the shifter back and forth a few times and it clears up. Try starting it in Neutral and see if you get any cranking.

The engine does not turn over, the radio does go off. the dash sequences. IMO, I think it is the battery, it's the original 2006 Optima. I am getting a Diehard in the AM.

Will post the outcome.

I am pretty sure your new battery will resolve the problem :)

Took the Red Top to Sears

12.56 volts 800 cranking amps. so the battery is good.

Now the radio goes off, lights sequence in the dash so I suspect the ignition is good.

Have to find out about the P/R lockout in the SG.

Continuity check to the solenoid and beyond.

At least I didn't buy a 200 battery and find out I didn't need it.

Ignition switch appears to be ok, cycles through all positions

Changed the starter motor relay with the VH relay.

solenoid, starter connections, starters are clean
rapped the starter with a hammer

BTS cable moves in console. did not detach it from the steering wheel, although the key cannot be removed from the column other than when the shifter is in P or N and the key is in the off or aux position

Reseated all the fuses and relays under the hood.

Just does not turn the starter.

Did you try jumping across the terminals on the solenoid? Haven't actually looked at the starter setup on my CRD, and I suppose it could be some esoteric BS design. However, I've never seen a vehicle that you couldn't activate the starter by jumping the solenoid terminals.

I've not done that, the solenoid is done on top of the starter, I'm having fun trying to get underneath it. You jump with a screwdriver?

I also wouldn't want to run myself over with the dang thing either

Screwdriver, short wrench, jumper wire. . . anything that will conduct electricity.

Bad starter. Wonder if they are readily available?

I have an extended warranty that covers it. I'll be finding out shortly.
