Had my first engine light come on Friday past while I had lent the truck to my dad to tow a trailer. Anyway it was due to a 15a fuse being blown for the stop lights, sure enough I had no brake lights!!!

I replaced the fuse but when I pressed the brake, the left signal lights would come on (dash indicator too). I traced the problem down to the REESE module for the trailer plug. I disconnected the module and all is back to normal and the engine light is gone out.

Looks like nasty trailer wiring fried the REESE module which in turn blew the fuse. Its going back to the trailer supppy store for a new module today....I was very happy to see that the engine light wasnt related to anything engine related!!!

So a blown brake light fuse will set a CEL? News to me. Wonder if a botched trailer wiring job could fry the BCM?

Apparently so...its weird

Hopefully nothing else was damaged...all seems OK now

I rarely tow other peoples trailers, and when I do I have a set of universal lights I usually use. Its 2 lights mounted on a 4' length of board that can attach to the trailer with straps, magnets or whatever. I personally wired my own trailers so I know they are done right and done very well.
