If you could pick any small displacement diesel engine for automotive applications (SUV) and any auto tranny, what would you choose? The reason I ask is because I'm looking into having a custom vehicle built. I don't know much about all engines. I'm looking at a few already, the 2.8L International HS, the 2.8L VM Motori, 2.7L Benz 5 cylinder, 3.0 V6 benz.

I like my CRD - if I were building one from scratch - I'd put in a manual transmission - the 6 speed from a Cummins would do fine.
That said - I had a FJ80 before and plan B was to drop in a GM 6.5 turbo diesel because the adaptors are readily available.

The GM was on my list for a while. I'd have to do more research, I'm also looking for efficiency, what kind of mileage and noise would that GM put out? I just don't want to shift with a manual, I've gotten really lazy. I like the VM 2.8, i'd block off the egr and get a good ccV filter if I used it, I like it for its great out put at 295ft.lbs. and the wet liners.

There are a few Wranglers up in the Port Angeles, WA area that are running the 4 cylinder version of the Dodge Cummins, they are getting the engine from wrecked or older bread delivery, etc. trucks and I think they came with a TH400 auto also from the trucks. They are getting about the same mileage we are from them. Have no first person knowledge of the setup, was told about it by a diesel shop owner that does conversions sometimes. His old 70's Ford shop truck runs a 4 cylider Cummins "N" engine and auto, he's had it in the truck for over 20 years.

Now that sounds like a combo I'd be interested in. I'd like the longevity, I'll have to research output of the cummins 4cyclinder.

For mileage - either the Cummins 4BT or - the Isuzu - you should be able to find one from an old delivery van - UPS style.
for the 6.5 I was hoping for 15 in town - 20 on the highway -
The best the gas FJ80 could do was 13 mpg.
