no urea injection ... I guess the 500 mile trips with no stopping are still a thing of the future :P ...

hmmm seriously though .. spring 2008 .. this might be a good secondary car to replace our 1.8t passat .. as we move past the "wife still likes her car" stage

The 08MY Jetta TDI is using the lean NOx trap to control the NOx emissions. They are far from a good solution. Their performance is exponentially shaped, wherein the efficiency of the trap will drop off very quickly then begin to slow down over time. You'll be hard-pressed to find it lasting the full mileage requirements of the EPA for emissions equipment. The new Cummins 6.7 engines are currently using the lean NOx trap as well, and come about 50-70k miles it'll be going in to be replaced since it won't pass emissions anymore. Just something to think about...

At work we have found these traps are good for @ 15 minutes of idling and they will start to plug and throw a CEL. Our mechanic's use an "adjustment tool" to get them working again. I think they use the 3 pound "adjustment tool" as the 5 and 8 pounders are too big for the job. In any case, they are expensive and maintenance intensive.....don't go there unless necessary.

Know anything about the Honda NOx unit?...it is supposed to generate its own urea/amonia and it basically the shape of a muffler?

Spring of 2008? I've been around VW's for a long time and one thing I've learned is don't count on their release dates. They are always a day late and a dollar short when it comes to product. They could say this would get here tomorrow or 2020 and it would mean the same thing, it gets here when it gets here.

Well, NOx traps ain't the end of the world. If the trap stops working, but the car still runs, would it be possible to just "go around it" like othe tail-pipe mods? Wouldn't be the first time somebody on this list did that.

Plus, I never get tail-pipe gas checks anymore at inspections because of the diesel, they just check my computer to see if it says things are normal. Computers are MUCH cheaper to mod than tail-pipes.

Hmmm?
