GM is building a plant in Russia while shutting one down in Ohio...and while asking for money because they are going bankrupt?

Let them stew in their own juices then. I say add a 100% tariff on any vehicle that isn't built here by the so-called 'American' car makers. You want to sell it here? BUILD ALL OF IT HERE.

For specific exceptions like our CRD with the Italian engine... Ok, build 80% of it here then.

Actually most companies try to build assembly plants as close to the target market as possible
shipping costs are a real expense - and import/export type taxes are normally lower on components than complete vehicles.

so an assembly plan in Russia would be to serve the Russian/European market, in South America to serve the South American market.

There are obviously exceptions - due to NAFTA - Mexican or Canadian assembly is cost effective.

but the idea of manufacturing components in the US ship to Russia - assemble and ship complete vehicle back to the US???
- your entire profit would go to shipping costs.

(does not mean I support the bailout - they need to eliminate a couple of levels of executives for bad decisions)

William Ford was interviewed on NPR yesterday. Ford is in a little better shape than the others. He indicated that it was their intent to bring some of their high mile compacts from Europe to market domestically but that they would be assembled domestically. He wasn't specific to product. I would certainly consider a turbo charge diesel that performed in the 60 mpg range and they do have them.

Could it be corrupt Labor Union Bosses in charge over the workers at GM, Ford, and Chrysler?
Could it also be out of touch Upper Management?

BMW, Mercedes, Toyota, and Honda assemble cars, trucks and SUVs here in the USA to reduce costs.

Little fact: A few years ago I was advising on the the contractor on the installation of a screw pump in a GM plant. For every Union Construction worker, engineer, inspector, or Technical advisor, there had to be a UAW member holding down a chair eating donuts and drinking coffee in the break room. It cost GM $500,000 to do the job that would cost a typical town $200,000 for the same piece of equipment.

Having the Upper Management and the Union Bosses engage in an old fashion duel with flame throwers would be a good place to start.

I think the Unions in the Big 3 should be forced to get realistic. A union is good in a place that needs it but in this case the union has gotten out of control. The wages and benefits are ridiculous and just add to much to making a car. The retirement benefits sap the capital of the companies.
