Break It In Hard

I have to say, that after my 2600 mile round trip run to Texas, that I'm leaning to the camp that says pour the coals to the engine after the 300 mile break-in specified in the owners manual.

Before the trip, it had 3700 miles on it and already had the AT muffler on. Now, with 6400 miles, the beast has more spring in it's step, even more than what the AT initially gave it. Running it at 75 mph for 2 to 3 hours at a stretch, for several hundred miles a day, seems to be what this engine needed to start hitting it's stride.

Heck, it's even getting decent mileage on regular #2 Shell dino now. Still driving to work this week on the same tank that brought me in from Nashville on Saturday (400 miles).

Going to give Hess #2 a try next, before going back to B20. Did some checking, called the Flint Hill Resources rep for NC (guys that make Arctic Express and Premium Gold diesel). He said they didn't sell to that many retail outlets in NC, but recommended checking with A T Williams Oil company in Greensboro, part of Wilco-Hess, that they marketed premium diesel in this area.

I'm in the "break it in hard camp" too. I just turned 7000 and the Jeep keeps getting better in both speed and mileage categories. I LOVE THIS TRUCK!!!

Let me know if you find any retailers around the Raleigh area. My brother's down there with his Pat Blue CRD and I visit often.

A week after I bought mine, I towed 4,000 lbs. down the interstate for 3 hours one-way, up and down these hills we have here in KY, at 65-70 miles per hour. And my engine seems to be doing well. Maybe it was good for it.

I think 110 miles per hour. However, I don't know from experience. The fastest I ever have gone is 100 mph, and at that point it gets real squirley with such a short wheelbase, so I backed out of it. I have only done that twice and probably won't ever again. That's too fast for a 4x4. But to answer your question...I think the speed limiter is 110 mph. Which is better than my Ford Ranger 4x4 I had back in 2003. It was set at 90!

The speed limiter is the upright windshield. Ha! I believe it's set at 80 degrees or so! :lol:

Had ours to 109 mph and it was just about all she had, but that was before I changed out the muffler. The sport was running 38 psi in all tires and was as solid as a rock, no lifting, squirming, floating or swaying which really supprised me.

We did a 160 mile trip the other day and averaged 31 mpg doing 73 mph down the 4 lane and about 12 to 15 miles in town.

Sure wish I had the VM or MB V6 diesel in my magnum. Heck I would even take the 2.7L CDR in the Maggie.

Just saw Startech chips the new 300C 3.0CRD to 248hp.

They chip the 2.8 only to 178hp, sure seams low. I was hoping for the 185-190hp range.

I think the 2.8L CRD is twicked about as much as needed by the factory when you compare the output to other diesels. The best mod is an exhaust mod.

Mine got the bring it home, fill the tank, and pull a jet sled over the Cascade Mts break in. Didn't hurt it a bit.

Only reason I might tweak mine with a performance module wouldn't be for the horses, but if they could prove to me I could get another couple mpg's out of the beast.

Walt can tell you about us bubblehead nukes, we're anal when it comes to how efficient our machinery is! :lol:

Best mileage I got on the trip was when running B20 biodiesel from NC, and Diamond Shamrock from east Texas, in excess of 30 mpg. Shell from Nashville on return trip did okay, well in excess of 25.

Citgo from eastern TN and Exxon from Little Rock flat out sucked, 22 mpg or less, may as well have urinated in the tank. :evil:

I found the same variation in fuel quality - on a trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C. last summer, I fueled up at a Scotchman Petro station in south Myrtle Beach, near a Walmart. The fuel was clear, no foam and when I left the station, it took off like a rocket, and was quiet. No idea what or how it was so good, but I wish I could get that every day.

We have been running B10 for all but 2 tanks and one of those was B2, and couple days a go the wife and I went shopping for shoes for me (16) & a jean jacket at the mall (160 mile round trip) and we did a fill before and after and the CRD got 31 mpg doing steady 73 there and back. We had less then 7 miles of off highway driving but that was not stop and go driving, mall and our house are just off the interstate.

For the times you can't get biodiesel, might want to check out http://www.valero.com/ . Valero and Diamond Shamrock are part of the same refining company, based out of Texas, also Beacon on the west coast.

Under Marketing, they have a store locator map. Clicking on the state will list all of the store locations in that state.

Unfortunately for me, all of the store locations in NC are 35 miles or farther from home. Fireman, you lucked out, nine different store locations in Rock Hill (Val-Mart) alone.

Their #2 diesel gave the best performance of any dino fuel I've used, as good as B20. Don't know if it's blended the same in other parts of the country, but the stuff I got in Texas was liquid gold as far as fuel mileage.

Thankfully I have a store no more than 5 miles up the road in Pineville that sells B20 (also E-10 & E-85) so I try to be loyal to that one station. Interesting thing is that one day when I was filling up (very slow pump) the manager came out and was asking me how ling I had been using bio-d and if I had noticed a difference. He was very interested in meeting his customers needs, a welcome change.
