Good day.

My a/c fan clutch does not seem to engage anymore. I cranked the a/c and popped the hood but fan clutch was still. However, upon jumping back into the jeep the a/c was darn cold and blowing hard. Is this normal? Looking up info on a/c fan clutches and most said if the clutch does not engage there would be no cold air. So why is my a/c seemingly working fine except for the fact the clutch stays idle?

I have on 06 sport with 118 000 k/m.

Thanks to any and all responses.

Peace,

Thomas

I'm not AC person but how long did you run the system? I ask because I do know the AC compressor clutch is not "engaged" all the time as the compressor does not run all the time. How often it cycles, what triggers the cycle, etc I don't know.

Are you talking about one of the fans in front of the engine or the A/C compressor clutch?

The A/C compressor clutch will activate as needed to keep cold air blowing in the cab.
With the A/C on, the electric fan in front of the radiator should also come on. It has no clutch.
The engine driven fan has a clutch but it usually wont engage until the engine is starting
to overheat.

Thanks for the responses.

A/C clutch is the issue. I know it is to turn on and off sporatically, is there a way to test its functionality without removing the serp belt?

Peace,

Scott

Are you sure you are looking at the A/C clutch? Not the viscous heater clutch?

You could...

1. have someone inside the cab push the A/C button, while you in front of the engine listen
for the click of the clutch engagement, and listen to the engine tone change.

or

2. with the engine idling and A/C on, pull the A/C relay and use a jumper wire in the A/C relay
socket to see if the clutch engages that way.
Just be sure you jumper the right contacts. You don't want to accidentally short something out.

A legitimate thought. Thomas - the viscous heater is located on the upper passenger side front of the engine and has a couple of hoses coming out of the top. It does have a clutch that IIRC engages based on coolant temp and will not be engaged if the temp gauge is much above about 1/4 or so. The AC compressor is basically at the bottom front drivers side of the engine.

Is your freon topped off? I hooked a gauge to mine yesterday to check pressure level and it showed high so I let some out to be in the "normal" range but noticed the clutch cutting in and out in that range. I added freon and the clutch stayed on but the gauge shows high pressure.

I was looking at the viscous heater after all. Thanks for the education. Totally understandable why the clutch was not engaging while the A/C was on haha. My bad.

Peace,

Thomas
