I just wrote Consumer Reports another letter the other day expressing my disgust with them for trying to scare people away from the Jeep diesel. Diesel is what we NEED more of in this country. And that CR review isn't going to help that cause at all.

And then I realized something...if someone thinking about buying a CRD came into this forum and read through these threads...they'd run away like they'd seen a ghost. Threads like this would scare someone away from the CRD way faster than that Consumer Reports garbage they published. Hopefully shoppers won't visit this forum before making their decisions.

Dont worry about it, this is what having a form is for, learning new things and passing ideas around, as long as people are willing to be corrected and also take new advise and not be a self proclaimed expert on anything then everyone learns, I have learned tons about cars from being on forms like this one. You can turn wrenches all day long but youll never know if your doing it wrong if you dont have some help showing you how the right way.

And yes your right, one thing a friend use to do at the track was stick a chunk of dryice in his air box and also used to keep a bag of dryice on the superchargers sitting on the staging lane. Really shaves 10ths off.

I have been looking into NO2 fogger and installing a pred chip, guess thats going the wrong way for saving gas.

Well I did try to start the thread in a positive light.... Like I said to begin with, I dont think it is something to worry about untill it is proven that a turbo blows, and Jeep wont do anything about it. Im going to push the oil in intercooler thing to the back of my head untill such time. I know what some people are saying about the VWs, but how many VW engines are perfect to begin with, no offense its just my opinion and what I know from having a girl friend that worked at the claims center for a dealer.

I guess Bottom line on this is I LOVE THE DIESEL you couldnt rip it way from me, It gets the best gas milage of anything in its class and some out of it, it hauls, pulls, rides, swims, muscels its way in the thickest mud sand lake river swamp hill it comes too. Only wish I had a SFA for it, but even thats not killer. This jeep is the real deal and anyone that thinks its not up to par can come show me why with their pathetic little hybrid fords and 4 banger CRV craps. Turbo problem or not its worth it to have the awsomeness that is the CRD!

there is that better, I really ment everything I said.

Over chilling is actually an issue in some diesel applications.

Yeah, good point, most diesels would rather run hot than cold, they get to the happy point at higher temps. cooling the air going into the cylinder wouldnt do anything, thats why cold air pickups for a diesel are not really used, pertol engines will have huge jumps in performance with cooler air but not as much in a diesel. Cooling the exhaust gas temp that would help to a point. help the turbo and not build heat soaking.

It's easy to reach a point where additional CAC chill is counterproductive on a diesel. One thing that hasn't come out on the whole CRD efficiency discussion is the operating engine temperature. On the Detroits I've been around, DDA found that 193 degree water temp is optimum and their software is tuned around this temp. Many newer diesels run so lean that they have a difficult time maintaining this temp and this drops off quickly when idling. On OTR tour coaches, most are equipped with a diesel fired preheater (Espar or Webasto) that will burn while driving in cold weather to make engough heat to keep the engine temp up and heat the passenger cabin. My DDA rep went as far as to plug-in his Pro-link and display the % idling time (which on a road coach is usually brutal). Cautioned me that they could void my warranty based on damage from excessive cold idling.

When I purchased, I didn't see any engineering issue with the CRD that could not be easily fixed. Have worked around diesels for over 20 years and have some big issues with DC on this product, their tech response, and service support. It's not just the diesel motor but issues with the transmission, suspension, overall cost of ownership, and the constant f'n with it factor that is turning me off. Expected DC to have it's corporate act together much better than this when it comes to diesels. Hopefully I will be proven wrong as I do want to keep mine. I'm about to the point where they can either fix this thing or they are welcome to buy it back. Paid way too much money for these headaches.

Yeah, if mine gets to that point I'll be mad and ready to trade mine in too. But so far I have 25,000 miles, no EGR problems, no tranny problems, no intercooler problems, nothing. And I work the **** out of mine too. I had a few minor issues early on. But they were covered under warranty and since then it's been flawless. Driveline is perfect in this thing. I guess I'll keep my fingers crossed...

For those who don't know the normal temp on the CRD seems to run 173<>175 degrees F, or at least mine does according to my ScanGage.

That was one of my questions at edmunds and siberia posted the 165F and wished for 190F. We have the viscous heater so water temp could/should not be a problem. That is why I asked somebody from Alaska-did your viscous heater run continuosly in frigid conditions-because of the cardboard in front of the radiator talk. We have ac lines right there that can supply a chill effect when the compressor kicks in for cooling(hot temps) except for the stupid ac on with floor selection. We also have the viscous heater to warm the block. How cool can the AIT be, keeping in mind with hot egr going right back in, and how warm can the viscous heater keep the water temp. Can we have the ac compressor and viscous heater "working against each other" and get improved performance (mileage with less pollution from a better burn - of course with the ccv sludge eliminated).
