I am thinking of buying an '06 which apparently was running well and then started making a "noise". I heard a video clip and the engine is louder and kind of sounding like it has a hole in the muffler. The guy had it at a dealer and it was being run and listened to with a stethoscope. reportedly there was no smoke associated with the event. I know rockers can break when the timing belt jumps but I would expect to see really rough running and smoke if a rocker had broken. I already have an 06 and have the timing belt alignment pins as I was gearing up to eventually do my own timing belt replacement.

My idea is to fix this one and sell it but want to get some opinions on what sort of work scope would be expected.

How commom is it that a timing belt would jump?
How much would it have to jump to damage a rocker?

Thanks in advance.

I've done 3. Expect to put a timing belt, water pump, thermostat, lifters & rockers, valve cover gasket, and potentially camshafts. The hole in the muffler sound is likely an intake valve or exhaust stuck open from a damaged lifter/rocker and it is puffing air in and out with little or no combustion. Don't buy just lifters or just rockers, buy both. Worst case scenario is the valve dropped. Good luck!

As it turns out the vehicle has 200,000 km and no timing belt was ever done. This could obviously turn in to more than I want to take on.

I would expect to see an aweful lot of extra smoke if there were broken rockers, but reportedl there was none. Is my assumption correct? Could it be that the timing is just off and no rockers were damaged?

Where are you located?

Are you looking at the CRD for sale in Surrey by the clown asking for $8000 for a vehicle making funny noises?

I saw it for sale online and laughed my a** off for several minutes. He has edited the original ad by the way....before he said it was making a knocking sound...could have lower end problems. I would not offer him anything remotely close to what he is asking and I have the tools to fix it, if the problems are only the top end.

All the prices for Libery CRD's in BC and Alberta are out to lunch...you would think they are gold. Prices in Ontario are much more in line. Well except for that one moron that wanted $25000 for his CRD in Ontario that someone made a thread about.

Blacksmoke comes from too much fuel and not enough air during combustion. If a valve is stuck open, there won't be any combustion at all. Usually when rockers break the engine runs rough because it's not getting enough air in or out of the affected cylinders. That's assuming, that only one rocker or one pair intake and exhaust, break on a given cylinder. If more than one cylinder is affected or all four rockers on the same cylinder are broken, the engine will run like absolute crap. It won't be smoking. Either way, sounds like this guy is on some good drugs. No way a broken jeep is worth 8000.

Yeah, you can pick up a working one with 200,000km for about $8K. Examples with broken engines go for around $2K-$3K.

Of course, at the end of the day you need to do the math taking into account what your market will bear.
