I'm going to tow my Libby about 2k miles behind a rental (Uhaul type) moving truck on a car-dolly type trailer.

I'm wondering what's the best way to do it: Remove the rear driveshaft? OR ?????

If I remove the rear driveshaft, will I still be able to drive it on/off the dolly?

Would it be better to put the Jeep on backwards? ….. remove the front DS? I would think that would be more of a PITA!

Thanks in advance.

DO NOT PUT IT ON BACKWARDS.

You can pull it with just two wheels down, but they MUST be the rear wheels as the transfer case is lubed by the rear shaft turning. If you remove the rear driveshaft, you can drive it in "part time" mode as a FWD vehicle and this will protect the transfer case.

To put it in neutral properly you should be driving straight on a level surface. Shift the transfer case through part time to full time. Now you SHOULD do the next bit while still rolling, but that will make getting it on the dolly impossible. So mount it on the dolly, and then: Shift the transmission to neutral with the engine running, and then shift the transfer case to neutral. Turn off the engine and wait 5 seconds, NOW shift the transmission to park. Test pulling the Jeep a short bit and ensure there aren't any funny noises.

But since the price for a 4-up trailer is nearly the same as for the dolly, and the risks are MUCH LESS with a 4-up (if you've never used a dolly, they are the nastiest handling excuses for a trailer)... Use the 4-up. It is much safer.

As you are towing a long way, dont mess with a dolly. 4 wheel trailer is the best. Loaded right so its balanced, makes for a pleasant journey. Too heavy at the front or back & it handles as bad as using a dolly.
Good Luck!

get the 4 up trailer especially if you are towing with a light vehicle as opposed to something like a dual wheeled pickup, but the dolly can be done.

Thank you geordi and layback40 !! GREAT info!!

Sounds like the best choice for me will be the 4 wheel trailer.

Less hassle.

I was originally thinking the dolly would be less cumbersome and easier to tow.

 Thanks again!!

You could also tow all 4 down if you attach hitch to front of towed CRD but more trouble and much more expensive than renting trailer . I have done this because one of mine has trailer hitch attachment on front. If you had ARB bumper etc wouldn't be much to attach an A frame tow attachment to it for around $150.

I recently used a U-Haul car trailer to transport a '94 Ford F150 about 1000 miles. I was skeptical at first, but I was quite impressed with their car trailer system. Towed beautiful and was quite economical. I would recommend supplementing their tie downs with some additional of your own.

Thanks for all the replies! I've decided on an aluminum trailer @ PENSKE. Tiedowns were quite beefy.

The trailer is a much better choice in my case as it allows me to load / unload the Jeep without fussing with the DS, plus as a worse case scenario, I can unload it and drive it if anything should happen to the rental truck!

Only down side was it was about $100 more than the car dolly, but for a 2K mile trip it works out to be about .05 cents a mile extra.

I have towed my 2006 CRD over 70,000 miles behind my RV , 4 wheels down with no problems.
Just follow factory suggestions- transmission to neutral, transfer case shifted to neutral, then transmission back to Park all with engine running.
Shut off engine and ignition key to first position off so that steering isn’t locked.

That would be a great thing, except I don't have a towbar and the wiring may be a little daunting for me.

Also the truck rental co. won't allow it unless specifically noted on my insurance policy.

When I had my CJ2A I flat towed it for over 20 years.

Thus the trailer being the path of least resistance.

Thanks for your suggestion tho!!
