Hey! I was hoping someone who could describe it better would pop in. I've got a 2005, so mine is different. Just examine all the wiring directly behind the fuel filter. There should be one or two looms, Not sure if they get crushed or rubbed, but check them out carefully, It's like a 3in x 4in area, right behind the filter housing. I've seen pictures but haven't found them yet, I'll link them if I run across them.

Now, as I recall, a p0700 code is a generic code in the ECM (I think) that just indicates there's a code in the TCM. You really need to get the actual TCM codes or you're just guessing in the dark as to what's wrong. Might help if you describe any symptoms you're having too.

I think it said you're in Italy, so I don't know how useful this info will be, but there's a Dodge Ram and I believe some Grand Cherokees around that era that use the same TCM hardware. At least the truck has a different shift pattern, but they are much cheaper and easier to find around here if you're just trying to confirm the problem and can get one easily.

Might want to check out any grounds around the engine compartment too. There's one by the left front fender that's bad to corrode and cause all sorts of problems, and I believe one back near the TCM somewhere.

Found this one picture on LOST, there may be more if you search, not sure it applies to your euro model.

Thank you all,
the symptoms are always the same: stuck on 3rd gear
instead as regards the TCM, which models / years of Dodge or Grand Cherokee have the same control unit ?

The TCM is unique to the Jeep Liberty CRD due to its shifting patterns for the diesel engine.
Transmission Control Module (TCM) -- 56044737AB
Some have tried using a TCM from a Dodge Ram pickup that has the 545RFE transmission with some success. But with them there are some possible overrevving issues beyond redline when downshifting under power acceleration.

Stuck in 3rd gear is just limp mode, could be anything from a blow fuse/bad ground to a bad TCM or transmission. You can pull all the electrical plugs off the transmission or remove the TCM entirely and that's what you'll get. Quick hint: If you put it in "2" or "L" instead of "D" you should be in 2nd, which is a lot easier on it if you need to move it around. Of course I don't recommend driving it like that.

Mine suddenly went into limp mode once and it did end up being the TCM. Got lucky and found one on eBay, but I tried the Ram TCM first. It's not the same software, as WWDiesel noted, but at least I could (carefully) drive it like that until I located a proper Liberty TCM.

I still think you should try to get codes from the TCM, and double/triple check all the basics. For what it's worth I actually got the code from mine with a Obdlink MX and Torque Pro, though I didn't trust it and bought a $700 scan tool that told me the same thing... Well I guess I kinda needed a decent scantool anyway... Not sure if it would work with a generic dongle, a 2006 Jeep, or even if my 2005 is just a fluke, but it did get the actual TCM code.

Here's the Ram TCM thread (and a bunch of other potentially useful TCM info) - http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=70718

Sounds like a newer TCM might have some sort of "Multi Flash" and would behave like a stock liberty TCM. I haven't experimented with it, so I can't say for certain. I'll have to look for them next time I go treasure hunting at Pull-a-Part!

Since you are in Italy, contact Yeti (Marco Giacomelli, he is in Italy) on this forum using email or pm buttons at the bottom.
He is also on FaceBook in the Jeep Liberty CRD Group.
Marco does reprograming of ECM's and I think he has done a few TCM's.
So he may be able to help you with reprograming a used TCM out of another vehicle.

I had mine stuck in third gear about a month ago on a long trip with the P0700 code. It turned out to be the large pancake filter in the transmission. I changed the oil and the filter and the problem went away.

Do you have a Transgo shift kit installed on your transmission? There is a resistor that is installed on the transmission pressure sending unit(passenger side of transmission) connecting wires 1 and 3 on the four wire plug. Tape came off of the connections for me and also set codes and stuck my vehicle into 3rd gear. Would be worth checking...

If you had it scanned with a witech, what was the underlying code(s) in the TCM?
