I just installed a FFDynamics electric fan and I am watching the temps from the OBD app, I have never checked them before so I wanted to see if these numbers seem reasonable. Ambient tempts 65-70, I have the fan set to on at 185 and off about 180, in town slow driving it stays in that range. High way flat driving it sits at 190-195. On a slower steep incline that I have driven many times before it hit 215 and the needle finally moved just past the center mark. I'm not sure I ever remember the needle getting past the middle mark except towing a 4500lb travel trailer through hills.

Those seem reasonable. I think the stock thermostat is 180 degrees. Is this a replacement of the stock electric fan or an addition? Love to see pictures of your install

The stock OEM thermostat's temperature is set to hold 176°F (80°C)

That makes sense, what I’m after is if someone who has the mechanical fan and the Hayden HD clutch could give me their numbers for in town and highway driving.

I have the 11 blade GM fan and V8 Hayden HD clutch along with the HDS thermostat and my engine coolant temperature never rises past the 1/2 way mark on the gauge regardless of driving conditions even when towing a 4k load on a trailer. OEM electric pusher fan is still in service as well.
The only thing that ever seemed to get too hot was the transmission fluid and hopefully I have addressed that problem with a much deeper sump oil pan. :D

Do you happen to know if driver or passenger side of the radiator is the hot side?

If the vehicle is running 190F on the freeway and you have the fan set to come on at 185F, doesn't that mean the fan is always running?

Mine stays slightly cooler it seems - it hangs out between 185F and 190F more or less all the time in 80F weather. If I'm sitting in traffic it will creep up slowly. Since the fan speed is variable, it will run at 10% starting at 195F, and I have never seen the engine get hotter than that, even towing ~3000lbs.

That said, I've done no grades and it's not exceeded 85F here yet... Supposed to be 105+F on Monday, so we'll see what that looks like.

Yes it would be on all of the time, there is a wire that I can hook up to an led to indicate that it is on. I am going to do that at least for testing to see if it is indeed running.

The hot coolant leaving the thermostat from the engine's head is connected to the passenger side of the radiator at the top with the radiator hose.
The water pump suction hose is connected to the driver's side of the radiator at the bottom pulling the cooler coolant after it has been through the radiator for cooling/heat exchanging....

Ok good, I have the temp probe in the radiator fins directly in front of the hot port.

Does anyone know what the CFM of the front fan is? I am contemplating replacing it with another FFDynamics fan of similar size with no shroud and setting it to turn on at 195.

You need a shroud, there is no point calculating CFM if half of em are not going thru the rad !

The fan kit that replaced the mechanical has the shroud, I’m considering taking the “ac” fan out and replacing with a larger FFdynamics fan with no shroud like it already is so that I can control it without modifying the ecu and get better can. No point in replacing it if the cfm doesn’t make sense.

Knowing the CFM won't help all that much... Fan CFM is rated for free air, so when you stick a radiator behind it the whole calculation goes out the window. It may give an idea, but not a particularly good one.

Also, don't forget the front fans are triggered by the AC circuit as well as temperature, so if you work around the factory system you need to account for that.

tomothyd:

WWDiesel's set up is the way to go; especially if you are towing a significant amount.

The thermostat in any given engine is typically a pinch point in the cooling system. If you can open up this pinch point you are increasing your total capacity to cool, just as long as the rest of your cooling system components are clean and working properly.

215 degrees is a bit high... the Model 001 has allowed CRD owners to maintain a tighter reign on engine temperatures... most owners maintain a rock steady 203 degrees no matter what the conditions are. Having that robust 11 blade plastic fan helps.

A message to WWDiesel:

I though you were running the G.M. fan clutch as well as the G.M. 11 blade plastic fan.... why did you go with Hayden?

I am running the GM fan clutch and GM 11 blade fan. They are just not AC Delco brands, they both came from NAPA and NAPA's fan clutches are supplied by Hayden I was told.

The GM fan & fan clutch is designed for the 6.0L V8 engine with AC and w/towing package.
NAPA part no.s (fitment: Chevrolet Truck)
GM Severe Duty Fan Clutch NAPA 271625
GM 11 blade HD Cooling Fan NAPA No. 8552223

The AC Delco (GM) part numbers:
ACDelco Fan Clutch PN 20913877
ACDelco GM11 blade fan: PN: 15976889
Requires four(4) GM 11516869 mounting bolts M10X1.5X18mm (mounts fan to clutch)

Fan Clutch PN:
Hayden HY 2786 or 2986
Four Seasons PN: 36973

WWdiesel what temp thermostat are you running? Is it the 203 that comes with the 001 housing?

And does the GM fan clutch engage a little later than the factory CRD one?

I am running whatever Jeff sent with the thermostat I got from him.
I don't remember what the specs were on the thermostat.
Dealing with Jeff can be very challenging to say the least.
The temperature gauge runs just below the 12:00 mark
.

And does the GM fan clutch engage a little later than the factory CRD one?
I believe the NAPA GM fan clutch I am running engages a little sooner if anything.

Thank you sir.

My daily runs just below the 12 mark as well. Came with the 203F thermostat. And I have an aftermarket Ultra Gauge. On it, the temp runs between 200-204. And I can tell since I put the thermostat in, it seems like it just keeps running better and better.
