First let me say at the start this is not about a CRD, not even a Jeep. It's on a friend's Lexus 300 SUV and they asked me to help. I am not all that familiar with auto trannies or Lexus, so I was hoping someone here might be able to give us some pointers.

He was driving earlier today when he heard a loud pop, and after that it seems that the tranny is stuck in low or 2nd gear. He can drive forward up to ~30mph at high engine rpms (like 5K). Everything seems fine except the tranny never up shifts.

My very rough guess was that the band(s) for shifting into higher gears broke or their actuators broke. I suppose it might be the shift mechanism too (not getting out of low even though it is in D inside the cab). Plenty of fluid in the tranny, and it is clean. Maybe some chewed wires or vacuum lines if this tranny uses those. The fact that it moves at all leads me to think it isn't the tranny fluid pump.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Lexus will probably be electronic controlled trans.
Need to check for electronic issues with trans.
Probably needs to be plugged in to a proprietary fault-finding device.
