I almost ran out of fuel running across country last week. I started out at Missoula, MT and then I started looking for a fuel fill some time after passing Spoken, WA. When the fuel light came on I was 35 mile from Moses Lake and didn't think I would make it that far but I did. When I filled up, the tank took 21.3 gallons. I thought that we had a 20 gallon tank so I can't figure how much more could go in than that even if filling the full neck. Is it common for services station to pad thier pumps. I didn't expect great mileage from pulling a 3,000 lbs trailer, but mostly got more than the 14 MPG I got this fill up. 300/21.3=14.08

I know I streached this tank but it looks like it took 6% more that it should. Has anybody else experiance putting in 21+ gallons of fuel in their tank??

IIRC, its 20.5 tank then throw in the filler neck.
When the fuel light comes on you have about 2.5 gallons of fuel left FWIW.

The CRD actually has a larger tank than 20 gallons. I don't have my spec sheet with me handy but I think it's either 21.5 or 22.0 gallons. I remember reading it on the window sticker, but of course I can't now find that either to validate.

Maybe I ran it so low that the fuel filter was drained also. I was so glad I made it to that fuel stop. 8)

I have my window sticker in the glove box or on my desk at my Delaware home. I have to check the glove box tomorrow.

When I dropped my tank to put the original fuel guage float on the cummins lift pump I determined it's total capacity is 22.5 gallons. Others have arriived at this figure also :D

If that is true, that means that I had a gallon to spare, heck maybe next time I go to the next exit. NOT!!

Like Joe, I measured 22.5 when I dropped mine, too. My light comes on at just shy of 19 gallons used.

My '05 shows 20.5 on the build sheet and in the manual. I suspect it will hold at least another gallon. I would be interested in finding a higher capacity tank to fit in the same spot.

Several places in Australia do long range tanks - but they're expensive

Finally got to look at the sticker and it claims it have a 20.5 gallons tank. Maybe I had to pump the air back in first then the fuel.

I would love to have 30 gallon tank, but not for over $1000.

I once put in 22.9 gallons and another time 22.1. 22.9 gallons was a dead stick landing at the Murphy station at 111th and Memorial in Tulsa.

I'll help muddy the waters a bit. The build sheet for my 2005 under "Standard Equipment" lists it having a 20.5 gallon tank, but under "Optional Equipment" it says "3.5 Additional Gallons of Diesel"...so 24?

What it means: 20.5 gal. capacity fuel tank, and they put 3.5 gal.s of diesel fuel in the tank at the factory.
It does not mean a larger tank! :ROTFL:

Comon trick with a plastic tank is to take it out & leave it out in the hot sun for a day & block all the openings & put a little pressure in it. Easy to gain an extra gallon. Just dont overdo it!
