 Post subject: Oil around area where engine mates to transmission

To everyone who does their own oil changes, have you noticed a little bit of oil around the area underneath the CRD where the engine is mated to the transmission, not far from the drain plug and oil filter? Is this normal or a possible leak issue? I have some oil down there, I cleaned it up (it is not leaking onto the ground, just a slight build up) and I am going to watch to see if anymore appears before my next oil change. I checked the oil level via the dipstick and it is just over the half way mark between min and max - same place it was when I had the oil changed (at the dealer) 4,000 miles ago. Thanks for your help.

Mine had done that, but it was the rear main leaking. I do my own oil changes, and make sure that I get all of the drips and drops of oil wiped up. Mine was leaking right where the trans and engine block meet.

I think a couple of other users have had a rear main leak as well. Something worth taking it to the dealer to check IMO ....

I am under warranty, so I am not too worried about cost to repair, but it is a major job to repair this? Does it require taking apart a lot of the engine or transmission to repair it? How'd you fix yours?

First you need to make sure your not overfilling the engine :shock: If it's filled to the full mark it is overfilled. Next time you change the oil, drain the oil completly and replace the filter. Then refill with exactly 6.3 quarts of oil. Start the engine and check for leaks. Turn it off and let all oil drain back down into the engine. Check the dipstick, it will be down between the two marks :lol: It seems the dip sticks are marked wrong.

As far as fixing it - definitely a job for the dealer if it's under warranty. It requires the removal of the transmission / transfer case, and the flywheel as well. I wouldn't want to do it myself personally, although I would if I had to ....

Nope -

dealer replaced the rear main seal on it under warranty.

As far as yours goes - I would look underneath as close as possible and see if the oil might possibly coming from somewhere else (I made an assumption that the oil was strictly in the seam between the trans and engine) - there are several possible sources that the oil can come from, including the oil return from the turbo, up higher on the engine, it could be running from the drain plug or filter as well .... and Joe Romas made a very good point as well - make sure you don't overfill ....

I would clean all of the drips up with a rag that has some degreaser on it, or spray the area down LIGHTLY with brake cleaner or something similar (when the engine is cold) and see if the drips / oily area comes back.

Thanks, yea I cleaned it up yesterday, the oil wiped right off with a rag and some spray cleaner, it was pretty dry and gummy. I have to get some service done to it anyhow, so I will have them take a closer look when it is there. I will point them to the rear main seal to start out though. I just hate the idea of them having to remove and re-install so many major drive-train components if it is actually leaking. Even though they have been fairly good about maintenance and repairs all along, the stuff I have been reading on here makes me weary about them tinkering around in an engine they seemingly know so little about.

Mine's had it since 2000K, same thing drops on the 2 bolts and oil filter. I suspect rear seal as well since they just about eliminated everything else.

Ok back on topic :D So I dropped off the CRD today to get the front and rear axle fluid changed (hmmmffff) and mentioed to the dealer to check the area near where the transmission meets the motor, which is roughly the area where there was some residue oil I mentioned at the beginning of this thread.

They call me back and tell me that I have a leaky turbo-charger (to be replaced under wty) and that is where the oil is coming from.

Quetions:

1. Can an overfill condition in the oil resevoir cause the turbo seals to leak (I have read the dipstick markings are not correct in other posts)?

2. If I was outside my 3/36 wty (Im not thankfully), would a new turbo have been covered under my 7/70? I am considering an extended warranty between all the recalls and TSBs I am reading about - even though I havent had to endure all of them myself. But if the 7/70 covers most engine components, I may skip the added expense.

3. What else would cause a leaky turbo-charger?

Mine is a 06 so mine is 3/36 :cry: This is the first vehicle I've ever even thought twice about the 7/70 warranty and my no interest monthly payments on the 7/70 will be finished at 3 years when it starts. Repairs are then $100 deductable but most everything in the car is included :wink: That way when/if something happens to my engine they can guess all they want and it's only $100 for me :!:

I took my 05 CRD today to replaced the fuel filter head and told the tech to look under the tranny and engine for oil. He put a dye in the oil and I have to come back next month. He will put a lamp to see if the dye came out if it does thay will replaced the back main seal.

I got it back yesterday (almost a week) and it doesnt seem to perform much better tho the new turbo whistles noticably louder (give it time to clog up) :shock:

I will keep my eye on the rear main seal anyhow to make sure they didn't mis-diagnose the issue. The turbo is a pricey job, I'm hoping this solves the problem and they didn't just opt to replace the turbo because they didnt know any better and failed to notice what Lewis said.

I am beginning to get worn out by all the CRD quirks and that Chrysler only gives loaner cars if you buy an Extended warranty.

This is why I do not deal with the domestic car companies. I keep hearing how they've come a long way in terms of quality and engineering, but they are still light years behind my other (foreign) car in all areas.

I am having a similar leak situation.

I noticed an oil leak several months ago in the same area you described. Watched it for a while, then finally had it diagnosed as the rear main seal and repaired under warranty just this summer.

Well, just tonight I crawled under the jeep to do an oil change. I haven't been underneath since the main seal repair. There is just as much, if not more, oil down there now compared to how it was prior to the repair.

I decided to pull off the hose between the intercooler and the turbo....have never had it off all this time. This is what I saw...

So, I took a flashlight and looked around the turbo and the oil is coming from the return line just as someone here suggested. I guess it is back to the shop. I'm cutting it close on the warranty...I think I'm at 34500 miles!

It very well may have been leaking from the rear main seal as well as the turbo all this time. I would think that the shop would have noticed that the leak was not coming from the main seal once they pulled the transmission....but who knows.
