Poor MPG with CRD Liberty

Hello Everyone,

(I Just cut and pasted my question from another forum I posted on) (Maybe I can get some more feedback on this problem)
This board looks like it has some great and knowagable people here I think I will learn alot from you all here!!!!

Need a little help… I purchased a 05 Jeep Liberty CRD about 1 ½ months ago. I had traded off my pick up to get something that got better MPG but still could pull a boat and a small trailer. So, to make a long story short. My jeep is getting about 13.5 MPG city driving

and on a 425 mile trip all interstate tip going 68-70 MPH I got 17.23 on first tank and 17.56 on the other. :evil:

Took it into the shop they cannot find anything wrong with it…. My ford f150 got just as good as MPG and if I had known that the jeep got such poor MPG, I would have just kept my truck. Any help would be Greatly appreciated..

WOW, we just bought our libby about two months ago. I'm gettin between 25- 30 if I can keep out of a heavy foot. Heck I'm even around 25 with a heavy foot.

Don't Trust EVIC, do the math!

I'd also try gettin diffrent fuel from another supplier. That'll make a diffrence too.

17.5 MPG There's somthin wrong, unless you have a gasser ( Patooie), Then that's great mileage.

Also Try throwin a new fuel filter on it. Depending on the mileage you have on the vehicle. If the rail isn't getting the right pressure, it'll kill mileage and power.

Dont't get mad at the little tractor yet, there's a couple flaws in the slaw with these, but the people in this forum are the best, i'm implementing the fixes found here, and I'm a happy Camper. all my gassers just sit now. Even at $4.35 for diesel.

Is The E Brake Stuck ON?

P.S. Is it still cold in St. Paul? They might be running a winter blend of fuel

Fuel filter, air filter, clean your MAP sensor. Do the ORM.(off road mod)

After that check air in your tires, and get a different fuel source.

How many miles on the odo? A dirty MAP sensor might be part of the problem. Its easy to remove for inspection and cleaning, check it out. There is a thread with pics and instructions but you'll have to search. Description:

....check your tire pressure, we don't run at 28 PSI. Use a good tire gauge and check your spare.
Don't buy into the BULL-A-VARD RIDE BS that was used by Detroit for years to hide the poor engineering that the big street boats had for years.
US Jeep , Truck, SUV, and Sports Car owners never drank that Kool-Aid :!:

The other items listed are what I would check too.

I do all the the math by hand and don't relay on theEVIC.
Well I can tell you that it is NOT a gasser.... I have tried different fuel from a different supplier and also has not worked. I will get a new fuel filter on it (jeep has 31000 miles on it know)... I don't think the E is on??? never used it.

I called the guy that had it before me and he said that he loved the littel tractor and it got no less then 20 in the city and 27-29 on the highway. I also called the dealer where i bought it from and they said the only thing they did was the TC recall.. Would that have something to do with it?? I don't know.

The 20 in the city is about right....... the 27-29hwy he said he got is BS, 23 to 25 is more like it.

It's No B.S., I'm getting 27- 30 Highway, About 22-24 City. Maybe My fuel is blended diffrently. Or my stop and go's are longer in duration. I'm using Dino Diesel With some power service. Havent been able to get Bio yet. But I know of a place not too far away , when I get to that area I'll give some B20 a shot

My Worst 400 Into 20 = 21.25 ( Filled to the gills with people and equip city and hwy, and was layin into it)

550 Into 20 = 27.5 :roll:

575 Into 20 = 28.7 :wink:

600 Into 20 = 30 ( Easy Pedal And was on fumes when I rolled into Fuel Island) :shock:

Unless My calculator is wrong, they are the numbers :roll:

No BS, I get consistently 29 m.p.g on the highway. I even got 33 m.p.g as an all time high from Indy to Evansville.

Always, air filter first - dirty fuel filter would starve engine for fuel, get really good fuel mileage - dirty air filter makes engine run rich, poor fuel economy - dirty MAF similar to dirty air filter - dirty MAP could make it run rich - bad rail pressure due to dirty fuel filter cannot make it run rich, tho monthly fuel economy would be astronomical, as it sat for months without running on one tank of fuel

BTW - welcome to the forum, Ramon - lots more activity here on a dedicated CRD forum, as you can see

I bet the dealership or previous owner put 15w40 in your Jeep. Try some 0w-40 or 5w-30 505.01

23.8 to 24.2 Odometer readings here, mostly 30 miles interstate
to work and back. A little bit of shopping now and than.
Have 28,000 on the mule, maybe it's not broke in yet.
Some are taking odometer error and all else so who knows what
the real mileage is. I go by what I have for the last 40 years.
As for your case it sounds like you need to look into the little mule
and see why you are getting the mileage of a gasser?

I read a few posts on the EGR valve could this be some of the problem?
If the EGR valve is bad will this show up on the computer?
Do you know if putting a SEGR kit in this will void the warranty?
Will this help MPG?
Is there anything else I can do?

I did unplug the ORM.... Should any service light come on? If so, no service engine light or anything that came on.

Check the threads and pick out an option for a lift pump. My CRD was more of a joy to drive after I installed my lift pump and got rid of the stumble and hesitation caused by air in the fuel system. Lift pump eliminates most of the causes of air in fuel.

Better running engine, better fuel economy :idea:

It's true guys; I have never gotten less than 25.2 GPS verified MPG and I do not have EVIC to monitor it. It got pretty cold here in Indiana too but used Power Service Additive in all tanks. I put the FIA grill blanket on before it got to cold though and plug in the heater when I know I will be making the trip. I mostly run 45-50 miles one way on a mixture of state road 2 lanes and back country roads with more stop signs than I wish I had. I can get the TC to lock mostly but I am not comfortable driving 61 on the back roads in the condition they are in so I rarely get into OD. I get a enough 4 lane driving to clean the converter on trips to Fort Wayne but not often. I've done a few mods as my signature indicates and have the in-tank fuel lift pump mod on order. F37 was done to it before I got it. I bought it from a dealer last June and have put approx. 8,000 miles on it since then. I traded a '95 S10 blazer and 14,500.00 for it so I can afford to fix the problems with it. As another member put it in another thread; "I seriously drove it for about 5 miles and knew it was for me. It's been at least 25 years since I have had a car that I enjoyed as much as this one"

I get 24-25 around town and 29-30 on the highway.

One thing I do know for sure: how you drive makes a world of difference in the mileage. Folks with a heavy foot on take-offs, or who consistently drive faster than 60 will lose mpg fast. Folks who use the brakes often, or rest their foot on the brake pedal as they drive will also pay for it.

The real key to getting high mileage on a road trip is to set the cruise to 60 and let 'er roll.

west coasters would get seriously run over at 60 mph when the posted speeds are 70-75 mph.

I've managed to get 32 mpg at 70 mph once and 33 mpg driving in the high, twisty mountain roads of SW Colorado....once all hand calculated since I don't have an EVIC.
