OK, so I go to the Firestone store Saturday to get a set of Destination A/T's put on. After I had been sitting a while waiting, the floor manager comes in the waiting room. . .

"Who's got the Liberty?"
"That's me. What's up?"
"Man, something is REALLY wrong with it. You need to get it over to Chrysler as soon as possible and have them take a look at it. Something internal in the engine. It sounds terrible!"
I paused a minute (here I also think his tech noticed the Check Engine Light on from my ORM and brought it to his attention) and then calmly said. . .

"Sir, IT'S A DIESEL."

Hilarity ensued.

He just looked at me for a minute dumbfounded, then literally went BACK OUT TO MAKE SURE. He came back in and said, "Well, it sure is. There's no markings or anything on it that says it's a diesel! I didn't even know they made those with a diesel engine!" Thus began a conversation with everyone in the waiting room about the merits of biodiesel, how nice it must be to have a small Jeep with a diesel engine, fuel mileage, etc.

The only bad part of the whole thing is that they plugged my MAF sensor back in.

"CRD" means nothing to most people.

I ended up putting the "TURBO DIESEL" part of a Cummins badge under where it says CRD as well as putting a decal spanning the rear window that says, "2.8L Intercooled Turbo Diesel".

People still tell me that something is wrong with my engine or ask me, "why is your car making that noise"? I've been frantically waved down at gas stations too, "Sir, excuse me, SIR! That's diesel!!" I've also had the pump shut off on me once. LOL!

My Grand Cherokee at lease says, "DIESEL" on the back, but it's very small writing. I've only filled it up a couple of times since I've had it, and on one occasion, a police officer came over and said, "Hey, is that the diesel version?". He knew his cars, and we chatted about the benefits of diesel. I told him what I paid for it, and he said, "Oh, I gotta get one of them. I'm looking for a new vehicle.". I told him I'd let him have a test drive if he promised never to pull me over. LOL!

I've been looking for a "Turbodiesel" badge to put under the CRD on the back, but I can't find anything that looks OEM enough to please me. If anyone has a good source I'm all ears.

The most fascinating part to me was that after I told him it was a diesel, he actually went back out to the service bay to make sure. I'm not sure if he did now or not, but I think he may have mumbled something like that when he went back out the door. I guess I'm just not that convincing when I look someone in the eye and say, "IT'S A DIESEL."

Seriously, I wish I had been in a better humor Saturday, but my allergies have been kicking my butt. I could have played the whole thing into a crisis, maybe gotten him to call Chrysler for me. . .

But then he may have slashed my tires.

Go to the parts counter at your big 3 dealerships and see what they have in their catalogs. The Ford guy had a dozen or so to chose from and got me the one I wanted overnight.

I cut the bottom off of one of these. The one I found had black letters, and it looks factory.

last July 4th me and the family were leaving the fireworks that night and in the traffic jam to get out of the county fairgrounds parking lot I was sitting next to a car full of high school kids. I hear one of them say "can you hear that jeep it sounds like crap and it looks new" after he repeated that to his buddies again i leaned out the window and said "it's a diesel". He then replied "It is? Thats tight".

Good story, but I have one BIG question:

If you were only there for TIRES... WTF were they doing opening the hood? Last time I looked, there weren't any tires under that, and what business is it of theirs to do ANYTHING other than alert you about the check engine light (that you obviously couldn't see RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOUR FACE)

Not ripping on you, but on stupid people in general like that manager. I had a rent-a-cop MP at a military base inform me that I had a lit check engine light, while he was taking his sweet time "inspecting" my information for a film shoot I was headed to. Thanks, I couldn't see it right there. Maybe I was just ignoring it, ya ever think that?

I know, right? I think it was a well-meaning tech "helping" me with the TERRIBLE internal engine problem I had. I wasn't worried about anything they might do - or attempt to do - while under there. They also do vehicle inspections, oil changes, plugs, etc., so it apparently is SOP for them to open the hood, as every vehicle in the bay had the hood up unless they were on the alignment machine. Look at your brake fluid and power steering and try to charge you for another service, yada yada, that old hat.

Put it this way - if they didn't know enough to realize it was a diesel, I wasn't worried about what they might do under the hood.

I saw a car once with the spare tire under the hood. Little foreign thingy driven by a pregnant woman with a flat tire in a snowstorm. I felt sorry for her and changed her tire for her.

LOL to ALL that. The only thing is, you have to take the engine cover off to get to the "spark" plugs. It's one thing to plug in the MAF hanging loose right there by where it obviously goes, but it's quite another to piece together the logic that the big plastic thing is not actually a part of the engine. . .

I hate to tell you, Geordi, but there are an amazing number of folks who never look at the instrument cluster, even to check their speed. I've had folks ask me why their engine was making that clunking noise (ruined main bearings -- no oil) and would it be ok to just drive it that way after putting in more oil. So it is quite possible that MP may have taken you for one of those folks. Your eyes aren't real high on your forehead, are they? (just checking, man, just checking)

The first time my x-wife took her mother in the Liberty her mother looked at her and said "did you take your husband with you to buy this vehicle, has he been in it yet?" referring to the noise from under the hood. We are now divorced but I got to keep the Liberty as she was tired of all us helpful Texan's telling her the green pump was not for her truck.

My first post but I got such a kick out of this thread. Just finished my SEGR mod friday and waiting to see how the mileage does on a 200 mile round trip tomorrow. The new responsiveness from the SEGR upgrade is very nice.
