My 5 1/2 year experiment with the CRD is over. I traded it today. It was impossible to sell. I had it on Craig's list where I live in NH and in the Boston listing. I also had it in local papers. In over 3 weeks of listing I got exactly 3 inquiries. One guy said he was coming over then called and said he had talked to a dealer who told him NOT to get a CRD. I tried to explain to him that if the dealer had a CRD to sell it would be the best car in the universe, etc, but you can't get past a bad recommendation from a Jeep dealer. A second guy called but never came over. A third was interested, but lives in MO. So, I traded it today. I got $ 9,600 for it from a Toyota dealer on a new Tacoma. After doing research on KBB/Edmunds/Autotrader/Etc I listed the Jeep at 11,800 then lowered to 11,300 then 10,900 and finally 9,700. Since the dealer gave me 100 less than the final listing I took the deal. I congratulate anyone who can get the $ 13,000 shown on KBB, I know I could not.
In general, my ownership was a positive experience. However, I just had over $ 1200 in warranty work for a new EGR and ECU (second EGR in 8,000 miles). I was looking at $ 500 for a GDE tune which I firmly believes it needs to keep going and $ 700 for tires. In addition, the prospect of a $ 1200 timing belt change was not pleasant. The last service kept the Jeep at the dealer for 3 days waiting for parts and based on my discussion with the dealer, parts are becoming difficult to get. So, I knew it was time for it to go. As I have neither the time, nor skill to work on the car myself I have to rely on the dealer, or some other mechanic (try to find a diesel tech who will work on the Jeep-I know I did and could not) to keep it running.
My old 2wd Nissan finally died and instead of getting a cheap pickup and putting more money into the Jeep I decided that it was time for a change and get one vehicle for both duties. As I am not impressed with Chrysler's handling of the CRD issues I have no interest in another Jeep product (even if the alleged Jeep pickup comes out) and would not get the vaporware promised Mahindra diesel for at least 3 model years post introduction. So, in small pickups the Tacoma was the only option, in my opinion.

I wish you all good luck as, unfortunately, I think you are going to need it.

Sorry to see ya go. I had a tacoma once. Trashed transmission, kept killing the rear wheel bearings (I didn't overload it). Poor mpg, power, and started to get cold natured. I wasn't abusing it, it just wanted to fall apart. We've got a Toyota Avalon though that has 260K on the clock, that's been a great car. We're still loving out CRD too.

Vt, I made the same decision a few weeks ago. Without a doubt, this was my favorite vehicle in so many ways, but with the unavailability of parts, and lack of knowledge at the dealership, I felt less and less comfortable with it. Also, maybe like you, I felt compelled to look towards Honda and Toyota because of their reliability, parts availability, and sheer numbers of people than can work on them.

I loved the diesel Jeep and had an enjoyable experience owning it, mostly because of this forum, but I am neither rich enough nor mechanical enough to continue forward.

If a Red CRD limited with 150,000 plus miles shows up on the East Coast somewhere, check with me and I'll give you the full history of this vehicle.

I know the feeling. I and the Mrs went through some serious deliberations when our 2005 shuck the turbo at the most inconvenient time that I was unable to handle it myself. We decided to hang on and so far the tractor is running much better with the new turbo. This week the Mrs took it on a 600 mile trip, loaded with just her, the dog, and the usual way women pack. She called me to report she got 30 mpg, which is a good 4 mpg better than we ever got on the original turbo.

What did that turbo cost you? Parts and or Labor?

One final post regarding the Jeep. I picked up the Tacoma today (Sat) at the dealer. The used car manager came over and told me that had he been in Thurs nite when I made the deal he would never, ever have given me anything like what I got in trade. He said that they have had a few CRDs taken in trade and have had nothing but trouble with them after the sale and that they are known as being "difficult" to sell in the used car trade. He said mine is going out to auction on Monday. So, if you see one with 73,600 ,miles on it in Patriot blue, give me an email and I can tell you all about it.

Gone are the days when you can use up the majority of the bumper-to-bumper warranty on a CRD and then trade it in for $20,000 (like I did with my first one  ). In complete and total honesty.. I'm in the exact same boat. I love this Jeep. It's so enjoyable in so many ways. But from a purely financial standpoint... it scares me to death everytime I take it out on the road. If something internal to the engine breaks, or if the turbo dies, I am totally screwed. I'll be making payments each month on something that just sits in the driveway.. because there is NO WAY I can come up with the thousands of dollars it would take to fix this thing. For that reason and that reason alone, I am also keeping my options open. :ALONE:

Can't get rid of the CRD till it completely dies i will eventually buy something else as a daily driver. But this thing has never left me stranded. Yes i had all the fuel system issues the EGR valve the TC and everything and i am a college student. But i have mechanical ability and have had alot of experience with Powerstroke Diesels. Not saying much when one of these little italian tractors has and issue but it helps. And by some calculations the money the GDE tune has saved me it has paid for itself and since i got it not a single problem except destroying the stock TC. And i dont understand why everyone is jumping ship on the CRDs. Yes it will take alittle work to get certain parts but the are still avalible through VM and everything else can be found online. And i have a dealer here in town offer me 13,000 for mine lifted and chipped without trade in. Seems people in the South East love the idea of little high versitile diesel vehicals especially with 4x4.

I am keeping my Jeeps, especially the LTD. My wife runs the Sport, and if she gets sick of it, that is her business. My LTD has been garaged since new, and still looks new, if she breaks, she will get fixed, or sent out the pasture, but it is not going out of fear that it might break, I am too optimistic to live that kind of a life.

At some point, these vehicles will be more valuable as parts than as runners. Mine, having suffered through a cracked cylinder liner, had nearly approached that point before being rescued.

My feelings exactly.
The wife could always get better fuel mileage.
I am scared sh**t about a catastrophic failure.
I love it.
I hate it.
Looking for another one.
So, when the Shumer hits the fan and BarryO shuts down the country I got a big tank of bio-D out back, yup that and loaded pop guns, you know the ones that liberals get so scared about. I think we are so screwed but am keeping the old Diesel Weasel that I love to hate, like my 12 year old lab that has eaten more than me.

I just took a backpacking road trip into the Eastern Washington Sawtooth range and my CRD gave me 32 MPG. I slept in the back and hiked my butt off. No other SUV could match that kind of mileage. Diesel is the answer to our internal combustion issues. Good luck.

Threads like this are why I am a little nervous about my CRD. I ended up with my Excursion w a 6.0 and the Liberty (hers) after the divorce and had all but decided to downsize to the Jeep. After almost 4 months, I still have both because I am a little nervous about parts availability and finding a mechanic for the engine stuff I dont want to do (timing belt in 20k miles).

wow I thought CRDs were hard to find. I would have gladly payed 10k for a 05 75 k miles crd:) This thread makes me very scared of buying a CRD. I am still debating weather to buy a CRD or a 3.7. I do want reliability. Now the question is if I am willing to spend 1-2k to top up oils and timing belt will it be reliable afterwords or I should just go for a 3.7 instead.

I would love to own a diesel engine for a while.

Isn't that the truth. Maybe I got mine at the price peak. It would suck to have to sell it and still owe money...

If you are willing to do a few small things, the CRD can be a very reliable diesel. I know what I would do! :SOMBRERO:

Jeep ownership is not for the faint of heart.
Doesn't matter if its a Wrangler or Liberty, diesel or gas.
You have to be truly dedicated to want to own any Jeep.

THE jeep ownership comment about not being for the faint of heart is 100% true. doesn't matter if it's a diesel or not...

x10 on the jeep thing, then you add the diesel thing, and you need lots of cash $$$$$ maint. and mods!!!
but nothing more fun than a jeep, nothing has the power and mpg than a diesel.
if you own a jeep to save money or a diesel just for the mileage. you will never be happy :furious:
but if you want a street truck that can go places, others can only dream of. you need a jeep.
i have owned a few other diesels and they all are bad stupid and they all have problems, audi vw bends chevy ford cat
i have owned a few jeeps why because i have fun using them and same with the diesels my crd gives me both all in one.
maybe im crazy but sometimes crazy can be fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
