New guy just joined here last night. Just got this thing yesterday, ran fine. On my way home from work today, pulled from a stop sign, got on it a little, but nothing serious, and all of a sudden it just fell on its face and barely ran. I nursed it to a house, bumbed a ride home and went and picked it up with my truck and brought it home. Could barely get it running to load it or unload it. It sounds like crap, kinda knocking a little, real rough, no power at all.

My 1st thought is intercooler hoses? As I'm pulling those, the inside of them is all oily. Inside of turbo is oily, but it spins freely. I dont see any obvious holes in the 2 hoses though.

Is there anything I should look for in particular that would cause this? I cant check/ dont have tools to check codes. Check engine light was already on from this stupid Edge EZ chip thats on the jeep. That's gonna come off soon.

If this was my Cummins I'd have no problems, but this CRD is all new to me. Thanks for any/all help! I need to get this thing back on the road asap.

before you get it too far apart - any chance of a 30 day waranty?

lot's of used car places will do that.

A pop - followed by no power and lots of smoke - is normally an indicator of blown hoses - you might have to clean then up to check - Sir Sam even pressurized his to check (he made fixture) mine was obvious - a split down the length - doesn't look bad until it's under pressure.

Ya, it never really popped. Just all of a sudden lost power.

If a hose blew, would it barely idle, and run rough at idle? The hose is my 1st guess, that's just what it acted like. But I'm paranoid that it may be more.

Check the hoses and then you will know. Easy to do, compared to other things.

Good luck!

I did check them. I can't see anything obvious. I'll try to pressurize them tomorrow. The passenger side hose is fairly new. But the drivers side looks old. But I would think it would run "ok" even with a hole in the hose. At least at an idle. I don't know, I'm not sure though.

OK, this sounds EXACTLY, I mean EXACTLY what happened with my CRD. It happened while driving about 50mph, all of the sudden black smoke...alot of it and no power. I pulled off the hwy and into a lot, looked for a blown boost hose or something, i couldn't find anything wrong and the check engine light was obviously on because the vehicle was off with the key on and I didn't have a code reader with me to check to see if it had any codes. So I attempted to start it back up and it ran perfectly. I got it home and less than a week later it did the exact same thing again.

Long story short I removed the MAP sensor (boost sensor) which was completely packed in with soot/oil gumminess. I cleaned it and haven't had an issue since!

Remove and clean your MAP sensor and hopefully that all it is. I'd be willing to put $ on it since it sounds exactly like my issue.

Good luck!

- Mark

Also make sure your vanes are moving and you have good vacuum to the turbo.

If your intercooler hose burst it will idle fine, and probably drive ok. Mine would even run down the interstate with a 2" split in the driver's side hose. Only getting on it, like an on ramp did it have low power and tons of black smoke. If you took the hoses off and rolled them in your hands looking for splits, I don't think you would have missed it. My first thought is that the timing belt skipped time, or like mentioned before the MAP sensor suddenly died or is plugged up.

Well, I cleaned the MAP and nothing. I put the hoses back on and buttoned it all back up, and now I can't even get it to start. Just some fuel smoke coming from around the exhaust pipe where it hooks to the turbo.

I'm leaning towards the timing jump now. Any other ideas? That I can check. I know I need to read the codes, I'm going to try to get that done tomorrow if I can borrow a code reader.

Has anyone ever heard of these jumping time?

Hi there,

I bought a Libby that had the same sounding problems. What are the miles and when if ever was the timing belt done? if you unplug the MAF sensor will the engine run better at idle? if there is a leak between he MAF and the MAP she will smoke like crazy and will be a lack of power but should not be knocking more. (you'd only have a difference between the 2 sensors if you had a leak somewhere.) If you are hearing a lot more noises poping knocking or rattling even at idle and or a rough idle/ miss then my money is on the Timing belt. Feel free to look up my post of the jeep that lost time (this is why we change our TBs at 100k) or something like that. Good luck and if you need help let us know.

It's got 92,000 miles on it. I assume it's the original belt. I was planning on changing it soon. But now sooner. Like I said, it won't start now. So I guess I'm going to tear into the whole mess.

Not very happy with the whole deal.

Definitely doesn't sound like a boost hose. Similar to CATCRD, I had a split in my driver's side boost hose that was big enough to put my thumb in:
Image
Even with this split my CRD would start and idle fine. It would even drive but I would have to take my time getting up to speed. It would build some boost and then "whoooosh" out and lose some power. I would have to keep going through that cycle until I got up to speed. I was actually able to drive it about 85 miles or so to get it home like that.

Did it sound anything like this when it was still running after it lost power and you nursed it home?

It only takes a few min to pull out the map and clean it. Like I said mine was completely clogged with a significant buildup. I'd at least check it and clean it if its bad before getting into the time consuming stuff.

Ya, similar. I'm gonna start tearing into it tonight. I want to check if it jumped time, which I'm thinking is what happened. And rockers too.

Have you checked the fuel filter. It might need to be changed or bleed. The only time mine wouldn't start it was fuel. Miles should do the belt very soon,
