I've been here for 7 years because I have a 2006 CRD, I just changed the oil again 115,550 miles, Mobil 1 0-W40 $9.60 per Qt, has anyone with a higher milege CRD change to a different less expensive oil, that still gives the comparable protection? Now I don't feel I do an oil change I think I am investing in Oil Stock.

I was just at Walmart today and they had the 5 qt jugs of Mobil 1 0w-40 oil for $24.97. Even the single qts were only $6.xx. I would check there if there is one near you.

Rotella T6 or Mobil makes a Turbo diesel formula that i have picked up for as little as 5.50 a quart. Both good oils i run Rotella in all my power stroke trucks and a few have over 250k on them.

Mobil 1 regularly goes on sale. Advance, Auto zone, and Pep Boys run deals several times a year which include a Mobil 1 filter. NAPA also runs sales. My Walmart carries the 5qt jug for around $26 or so IIRC. I have not paid full price for M1 in years. I, too, have seen it for over $9/qt and laughed. What an insane price! I also run M1 0w40, and no troubles for me.

I switched to Rotella T6 5w40, not because of cost but because I think the 0W40 oil is utter crap and the primary reason for my rocker/lifter issues along with the EGR.

I been using Rotella t6 for years. I bought like 7 gallons of it when tractor supply had them on sale last fall for like 17.99. Other than finding a deal like that wal-mart has it for about $23 a gallon everyday in my area.

You have to watch storing oil for long periods of time a lot of the synthetics have a shelf life.

Walmart is about the least $$ you can get Mobil 1 0w-40. If they are out, Advance auto or Pep boys will match Walmart's price.

I still believe Mobil 1 0w-40 is a good oil and is not the reason for rocker failure. Without EGR these engines would have no rocker issues. If my jeep lasts 70k more miles i will tear it down to inspect the 80k rockers i installed 10k ago. Lots of engines use M1 0w-40 and Mobil has had no issues with other engines. It also has better starting and MPG than 5w-40.

Synthetic will break down just like it would in a motor especially if left in and environment like a garage where it can go from hot to cold to hot. And I have never seen and expiration date but I have seen synthetic separate after sitting a few years.

Also the euro spec oil is atleast 5w40 where there isn't mpg restrictions and needs like in the US market. And by all of our euro members the rocker arm issues are unheard of over there. So why not take and extra percaution and possible let the CRD see 300k?

Remember here in the US they must maintain a fleet wide standard mpg rating.Why Chrysler switched to 5w-20 for most gas engines but never redesigned the engines to work with 5w-20.Most are going back to 5w-30.My old mans Superduty with the 7.3 is almost at 800,000 miles on the original engine,only driven with a trailer attached,and 15w-40 Cenex CO-Op engine oil(Valvoline) changed every 5000 miles.

Please show me one case in Europe where there are tons of these engines that a case of rocker failure has occured? I can show you multiple US cases where it has occured with people following the user manual and oil specs to the letter. I will continue to use atleast a 5w-40 and heavier especially after i do my head swap here in a few weeks.

Please show us a proven case in the US where 0W 40 has indeed ruined the engine. There has been lots of speculation on this, however, there has been no proof to date. Again, I feel it's a combination of the long oil change intervals and an operating EGR system. I think The EGR system itself is the cause most of the troubles. The 5W 40 oil may actually stand up to the EGR soot issues slightly better, but there have been reported failures with those using 5W 40 also. I have used 0W 40 for years in other European engines. Both gas and diesel, TDI's, turbos, et cetera. Never a single problem. Additionally, I have rebuilt quite a few diesel engines, particularly 50 diesel engines, made by VW Audi. These engines are known for serious where issues especially when using 15W 40 oil. I have ran 0W 40 in several of these engines, and have opened them up after hundreds of thousands of miles, and there is no detectable or measurable wear. The use no oil, and compression is as good as the day it was rebuilt. I have yet to have to open a TDI engine up with 0w40. I no longer own a TDI, unfortunately. If I owned one of the pre-2004 nine PD TDI's, I would certainly run 0W 40 in it. Again, I see no trouble with 0W 40 or 5w 40 without worry. These are simply my real-world observations, take it for what it's worth. :2cents: Once again, let the oil debate resume!

I have seen many pictures of starved rockers in these motor actually 3 to be exact and most had been running the EHM for quite a while mine included since 15k and GED tune since 60k. But can you denie the us and European oil specs for this vehicle are different? Also why no reported cases of failure over there minus the vacuume controlled EGR the exact same EGR system as ours. All I am saying is there is a connection and I am not trusting my CRD motor to anything less then 5w40 and if it gets real hot here like it did last summer 15w40 it will be. And Troy got to love that old reliable 7.3 got one in and excursion and never had and issue.

Problem is you can blow holes in the thinner oil is betetr on start up thoery also as it all drains back into the pan while the thicker oil will not.That has been proven also,same goes for your diffs.
