Went and checked. 172 miles.

The bearings and seals are all perfect, just the brass impeller did not stay pressed onto the shaft.

OK, thanks. I guess I'll hold both sides and test them with a little pressure. Do you have another one to compare it to to see if it's something we can identify visually?

Also really nothing to see - either it spins or it doesn't. As you can see it moves very easily. It was tight when installed, maybe heat caused it to loosen enough to spin?

Isn't Graf the OEM manufacturer?

Nope. The OEM pump is a VM branded water pump. Construction of the OEM pump is different than the GRAF pump.

Whoever pressed the impeller onto the shaft should have noticed that it was loose, unless a machine assembles them? I bet we can catch this by testing it with a good amount of counter force, but not too much, maybe?

I bought one last week. Not sure whether I want to install it now. I will look at it closely and see if I can see any issues.

Well it wasn't loose when it was installed. Maybe the press fit wasn't as tight as it should have been.....but how would you know? You would have to measure pressing force during install, I'm not sure thats part of the assembly step.

Always good to look over parts before install. Bear in mind lots of other Graf pumps have been installed and we haven't had reported issues with those. Still nothing is perfect and parts do fail.

I would guess if it's supposed to be a friction fit, if you mechanically hold the pulley, and can put a rag around the impeller to protect your hand, and cannot by hand, spin it on the shaft, it's probably safe to use. Wouldn't try that with a plastic one though.

I suppose if both components are metal, then you could drill it and pin it.

I'm sort of surprised it's not pinned or keyed to the shaft.

I wouldn't do it myself though, if it's still under warranty.

Meh, not worth trying to fix. Too much is riding on the water pump working. If the bearings fail the rockers go out. For the trouble of pulling the Jeep apart you might as well just replace it.
