Got it back from dealer tonight. 4hrs labor including flash. $433 USD out the door. Runs great and starts every time. They had it done before lunch!! I really think these guys know the CRD. They told me they sold a "bunch" of them.
If anyone in Ohio is interested the dealer is Whitesides in Mt. Sterling Oh. South of Columbus

The service dept was closed when I picked it up so I was unable to get any info from the diesel tech....

You got a better price than I did!! Your dealer must have gone with the TSB allowed labor rate (2.5 hrs plus flash) instead of the BS my dealer gave me about being half the actual time.
Mine is still in the shop, waiting on a thermostat since last thursday.

Hopefully I can pick mine up tomorrow evening. I'll try to get a copy of the TSB then.

Bubba.

I'm in Columbus and will keep them in mind. So far Crown Chrysler/Jeep in Dublin has taken care of me and their tech's although most likely don't see many CRD's, have done good work for me.

$433 that's decent! I guess I did ok seeing as I got the GDE tune and the plugs for around $600 + plus lots of "fun" dealing with the thread stuck to the gplug.

If it wasnt for the bad thread issue the job really isn't too bad. Everything seems to be running well (for now, knock on wood)! And the dang CEL for the MAF is gone now too!

"lots of "fun" dealing with the thread stuck to the gplug."

Painemann, that is the main reason I decided to take it to the dealer instead of doing the job myself. With my luck.....well you know how it goes.

Joe, Whitesides is well worth the drive. They sold lots of these and have done at least 2 glow plug jobs including mine. If you see Tigafilas pics you are going to want to get those ceramics out ASAP if you havnt done so already. I was sick when he called to tell me about his engine failure, just sick. BTW, He is in the Columbus area as well.

Bubba.

I saw the carnige to his engine :dizzy: I'm kind of on the fence because of what VW went through with their ceramic glow plugs. I would not to wait for an engine coming on a slow boat from Italy but if it would happen to me it would be covered under my extended warranty. It's good till May 19, 2013 or in 30k more miles. The jeep and I are both retired unlike when I was putting 35k a year on VW's :jester:

My Reno dealership originally ordered the old glow plug on Jan 21 as I had a bad #3 right before I had to "smog" my rig  Then after a week went by told me they had just received the memo from Chrysler on the 24th regarding the new glow plug kit. Needless to say the whole thing ran me $530. Not too happy with the dealership or Chrysler for screwing this all up.
:dizzy:

However, on the bright side, my rig hasn't driven this awesome in several years :JEEPIN:

I am sure that the reason why your vehicle is running better than ever is because the latest Glow plug ECU flash the dealer installed, also incorporates many new engine software monitoring updates that increase efficiency and performance.

Are you being serious or sarcastic? I thought the update only changed gp voltage and maybe duration.

Serious. My local dealer informed me that once the ECM is connected to the jeep firmware update site, all the firmware that needs updating will be updated to the latest revision, including the latest GP update.

That goes along with what I believe. Once connected it's a all or nothing type deal that's controled remotly and it's out of the tech's hands :ALONE:

Ok, now I see.
I, having the latest update, would only get the voltage corrections.

Yes all or nothing. Mine runs the same as before when it was running with a bad glow plug. I think it set everything to relearn so some may notice a difference.

Does anyone have a copy of the TSB for the glow plugs that they could share?

So far the TSB is at the dealer only, I don't see online at Mitchell 1 yet. You could ask the dealer. :juggle:

I live in a cold climate (Quebec, Canada), and my glow plugs seems to work correctly.

But, what will i do when the GP will stop working... I got the GDE ECO tune, so it will be erased and my $$ will be gone? Is there a way to not lose the gde tune?

Thanks

Here is what we recommend if you decide to change to the metallic glow plugs. Use the flash tool and install the stock tune, then have the glow plugs installed along with the dealer flash update for this. Now erase the flash tool, reload it for the CRD and read the new stock tune. Email the tune to us and we will create a new GDE tune for the metal glow plugs. The charge for this is $50. In this manner both the stock tune and GDE tune will be setup for the new glow plugs.

If not using a dealer, you can just ask us for a new tune for the metal glow plugs. Install using the FT and then change the glow plugs. The issue with this is you will not be able to revert back to stock, since the stock file would still be set up for the ceramic glow plugs and it would burn out the metal glow plugs. The $50 fee still applies.

If you are not having any glow plug issues, just leave them alone till one fails...they might never go bad.

Best advice ever. Don't poke the sleeping bear if you want to survive. I went more than 100k on my Jetta without ever touching the glow plugs, and had no problems at all. Might have something to do with living below the frost line, or within a local phone call of Hell. I don't think the ones on my CRD have ever been on, except when I was in Virginia last year.

I have a copy of the service bulletin given to be by the dealer when I went to pick up the glow plug kit. It specifically states you need to update the ECM. I'll scan in the pages and upload it shortly.

Local dealer cost to do the ECM reprogram will be an hours work here at $95.00/hr. Talking with him though seemed like it could cost more. I was surprised to see that the time to reprogram the ECM is 1.1 hrs.

I've always assumed that the new GCM was set at a lower voltage of 5v compare to the 7v ceramic plugs and that the ECM update was just to adjust the duty cycle of the plugs. I'll be looking into the GDE tune now though.

this is the reply I got from VM motori when I emailed about the glow plug that came out with aluminum stuck to it.

Chris – take the vehicle to a Chrysler dealer who specializes in the Jeep Diesel. If you have trouble locating one than call Chrysler customer assistance 877-426-5337.

NICE!
