I can't think of any other parts right now. The folder is not with me
Sure could use the help.
Thanks to Jeepdan for all the help so far.

The wiring to and from all these parts is good? Any chance something such as the new crank position sensor is faulty out of the box?

Could the original air in fuel be giving you grief now that the presumably screwy crank shaft sensor has been replaced? Did you hook the lift pump back up?

The lift pump was never disconnected.
I am assuming that GDE could have detected a faulty ECM.
I had discussed the issues I was having with Kieth before sending the unit to him.
The crank position sensor seemed to help for a short while.
All the wiring seems to be fine.
I'll be honest though, my mechanic is probably only changing parts and not doing alot on the diagnostic side though.

Well after scratching my head for hours, reading through numerous posts here, and replacing almost a dozen parts it seems I am no better off than before.
Replaced the crank sensor and it seemed fine for two days. replaced the engine coolant temp sensor and it wouldn't start after a short trip this afternoon. I dont think the sensor was bad, but don't know how to tell.
I am at a loss of what to do/try next. The mechaniic I am working with is a close friend and suggets "getting rid of it". Not really a good option for me. I really like the way it runs, when it's running.

Mozzio, While your CRD is having one of it's "hot no start" episodes, remove the large connector (C1) from the ECM and check resistance between pinouts 87 and 88 of the ECM harness connector. This might tell you whether the crankshaft sensor wiring circuit and the new sensor is OK. I have the resistance value of a new crankshaft sensor written down at the garage, I will post tomorrow.

I received a new fuel filter head on Friday.
Installed it yesterday and things seem to be fixed.
I had the updated filter head installed at the dealership at least three years ago.
My brother and I were under the hood while trying to start it and I could hear it sucking air in around the primer plunger. Don't think we would have heard it in a shop. I'm guessing that's why it wouldn't build up enough fuel pressure to fire.
Spent way to much money and time for such a simple fix.
I'll post again after a few days of driving it to confirm.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to offer their advice. This board and it's members are amazing! :D

mozzio, seems like from the lack update your problem was eventually solved by that filter head?

I'm having the same issues. Starts Great when it fires, shut down on me while turning in a parking lot yesterday. I KNOW my filter head is leaking, so I guess that'll be first then the sensors.

Thanks for this great thread fellas! Sorry y'all had to suffer the big ticket items. I feel like I should split the cost since it's going to pay off for me as well!!

New fuel filter head on, cranked up just fine after bleeding the air. Died on me getting on the interstate. New Crankshaft sensor in. Died on me after a 15 min test ride. I'm getting tired of walking/towing.

Are you still finding you have to bleed the air out? I had replaced the filter head and it seemed good to go, but before I knew it, I was bleeding the head twice a day, 40 mile each way commute :dizzy: . I've now replaced the hoses from the tank to the metal lines and no more leaks  . Those plastic clips between the plastic heads on the tank and the metal fuel lines were obviously the source of the leak, once you get your hands on them.

I had came back and posted an update. It must have been in one of the other threads following this condition. Seems there are three or four.

The real problem were two intermittently faulty injectors as diagnosed by the dealer in Tallahassee. It was the number two and three injectors. The mechanic could not explain why they were not continuously failing and I really didn't press him. Just glad to have the little Jeep running well again. I have not had any problems since their replacment.

mozzio -Having similar problems you and jeepindan were having. Runs fine til you shut it off and try to restart after a short period - won't start til it cools down. Did the dealer tell you what was wrong with the injectors?

So far I've replaced the cam & crankshaft sensors and installed the new fuel head. Runs fine if it starts just that uncertainty for a hot start after sitting for a short period.

Thanks!

Just got this info from Oregon Fuel Injection:

Hi John, your member that replaced the 2 injectors was the one on the right track!! Typically it's the return system inside the injectors that intermittently have the problems. They have ball check seats inside and what happens is when the ball lifts, sometimes they move slightly to a "flat spot in the ball or the seat it self is grooved up and they don't seal all the way thus, most of the fuel that they are receiving gets bypassed back to the tank, and the injectors never get enough fuel pressure to "pop" and send fuel to the cylinder.. so after it cools and the metal contracts and the ball moves or seals due to the contraction, the pressure is back & boom she starts and runs.. and at that point the high pressure pump that feeds the injectors fuel is now building enough pressure to overcome the bypass and they stay running. i do suggest that you take it to a competent diesel shop for diagnostics In tucson there is Desert Diesel Fuel Systems LLC, they do have drive in services and their phone # is 520-792-0132 and their address is 2395 N. Fairview ave. Good luck!!

Oregon Fuel Injection.

I ended up taking it to a dealer in Tallahassee (fl). The tech/mechanic did the leak down test to determine the injectors were faulty. He did express that he had a hard a hard time since it was intermitent. I never asked him to elaborate. It has been running great since the repair 6 months ago. The GDE tune has been great also.
