You will want to retain the water line from the head however, just run a rubber hose up and over to the Y connection and eliminate the metal pipe that drapes on the top of the engine.

Just curious, why? When I disabled the EGR and removed all the plumbing I simply plugged the head fitting and replaced the "Y" with a straight piece of pipe as was suggested by some others on this forum.
Do you feel the water line serves any other purpose after the EGR cooler is removed?
Been running without it for well over 6 months now with temperature right where it is supposed to be! :JEEPIN:

With the problems of head gasket failures on this engine, I like the idea of retaining as much water flow through the head as possible.

I wonder if running cooled water from an inactive egr is part of the HG issues as well. One side cooled, the other not..?? Hmm, I pulled it all and plugged it also, looks good so far, but only a month yet.

Shouldn't be. The water is actually coming OUT that port on the head, the way this water pump is designed, it forces all the water UP through the block from the bottom rather than from the top down. Think of the water pump as a squirrel cage, the suction is the large elbow at the back of the water pump and pulling from the radiator line and the other hoses that connect to the elbow, the outlet is the square hole that mates with the side of the block. Coolant passages are all around the outer walls of the block and match with coolant passages in the head - The outlets are the thermostat and the smaller port by the EGR between the #2/#3 glow plugs.

That coolant loop from the driver's side might not be doing much, but I'm in favor of it doing *something* rather than nothing, and possibly creating a hotspot, right?

You've definately got a good point. I'm nuts about removing extra stuff, but if my HG ever leaks, or head warps, I'll probably reinstall that line. I'll put the IR camera at work on it too, see if I can see a hotspot. :frankie:
Thanks for the coolant flow info!
