The drain plug gasket is supposed to be a crush type. Crush too far and and you'll have an oil leak. Reuse and I assume you'll be very likely to have the same issue. I agree that it is not the best design on DCX's part, but I would follow the dealer recommendation and replace it everytime.

Would like to find a replacement in nylon or some other durable & flexible plastic. What I have in the bag is a simple, solid copper washer. Didn't see anything that looked crushable. It looks fragile and can see it distorting (turning egg shaped) if overtightened.

Advance Auto sells an assortment of oil drain plug gaskets, about $2.

My '93 Volvo has a crush washer-the dealer charges $ 1.25 each. I re-use them 4 times or more before changing. You can see when you need to replace as the washer gets thin.

All our Cummins engines here at work use the same copper washer on the pan plug. I usually change them around 500,000 miles-JUST TO BE SAFE!!! Let's not get crazy over this.

Come on. How come those washers don't come with the oil filter.
I use Bosch or Mann filters on my Mercedes and they both come with the replacement crush washer.

As for the 1st oil change, mine has be scheduled for next week. I will have about 2000 miles on it by then. I just cannot see all that crap floating around in the oil for 6000 miles. Good news is that I asked over the phone about brining in my own oil and they said that would be just fine. So Shell Rotella T 5W-40 Synthetic it is.

My manual says every 12,500 miles. I see no reason to do anything else.

Or you could get a Fumoto drain valve as a replacement for the drain plug and then the washer replacement would be a non issue. The drain valve is really a neat setup. I love it.

Dumped it at 1689 miles. It was BLACK. I'm running Rotella T 5W-40. I did have a question on the oil filter. The Chrysler (OEM) filter was larger than the FRAM PH8316. It obviously fits fine---just a little shorter. Anyone else running a FRAM?

I used one on the first oil change, won't use it again. NAPA Gold is a much better filter for the @ same $.

I did the same thing, out of convenience. Also found availability of the 5W40 to be spotty at times so I get an extra gallon when I'm in Wallyworld and I see some on the shelf. Keep enough 5W40 on the shelf for the next oil change. NAPA store is close to the house, stocks the filters and hopefully will also have the fuel filter soon.

I changed mine out at 623 miles. I ordered three wix 51516 filters from amsoil for about $25 including shipping. The oil I used was Mobil1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40 which is the same as Mobil Delvac 1 5w40.

Here is the part listing from the wix site:

http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup/ ... Part=51516

Link to the specified wix filter at the amsoil store:

https://www.amsoil.com/storefront/detail.aspx?ID=9272

Mobile 1 Turbo Diesel Truck:

Rotella T is not a true synthetic base oil. It is a hydrocracked Group III, so I prefer not to use it because calling it full synthetic is deceptive marketing IMHO.
