I suppose it is possible that you just got some crud in there. But with as fragile as the threads are in this pan it could be stripped or cross threaded. Might want to make sure you arent in a big hurry to get anywhere the next time you change your oil. Even if the threads are toast, you can probably have the pan drilled and tapped for a larger plug.

so you think i just might need a new plug and that the pan is not ruined?

With the pan being aluminum and the plug being steel, the aluminum would strip well before the steel. Now if the steel plug got damaged somehow, the damaged threads on it would remake the aluminum in their image. If I replaced the pan, I would replace the plug too. If you go to an oversize, a new plug is a given.

Yep.. this just happened to me. Dealer thought they would have to replace the entire oil pan but DCX told them to just re-thread it and used a different style plug...$110 later sounds like a crappy design to me if this many people are having the same issue.

My dealer said they couldn't get an oversize plug for it....and get this....$914.15 to replace the pan!!!!!!!!!! I bought an M18 x1.5 and a tap for 15 bucks and will try that first. Guess where my next car WON"T be bought at

Yeah, I would try a different dealer or make them consult DCX first.

it's funny that this got brought up. well i shouldn't say funny but...last time i changed the oil about 3k ago something strange happened. after i drained the oil and went to put the plug back in it stopped several turns in and got real tight so i backed it out and started again, and it stopped up around the same point so i just kept her going and got her through the tight spot til it was tight. did i strip it out or do you think i'm ok?

Mine did the exact same thing. It got tight, i backed it out and tried again. Seems like it got tight the second time too. I cant remember if i just put some more force on it the second try or it just went. This is not cool. I'll probably loose sleep on this till the next 6-8 thousand miles goes by.

Yeah, thinking back, I noticed this too, before it wouldn't tighten at all.

I emailed Greg at Lubrication Specialists, He said the they make a Fumoto F104 in the M18 x 1.5. I am going to order one of those and be done with it.
