Only question I have is...What the hell do you do with 20 gallons of gas/diesel mix?????????? That would keep a lawnmower running for several summers!!!
Do like one service station did a few years ago, they dumped their recovered fuel from a Ford PS tank into the main gasoline tank. Like the guy said it was 90% gas and that dumping it into the 20,000 gallon gas tank would never hurt any car.

Funny, my buddy has a Duramax diesel, he filled 4 skidoos with diesel on the way sledding one Day!!! LOL Gas engines dont run well on diesel. Luckilly there was no damage and they just siphoned off what they could and topped off with gas.

I was wondering: How did he get her to actually pump fuel in the first place? My bride of some years will touch a lot of things but a fuel filler handle is not one of them. This is a blessing now that I think about it.

Anyway, when I find myself daydreaming at the fuel island I just look down and grab the greasiest, blackest, most oily pump handle (usully has a lot of residue on the concrete just south of the hose) AND then double check to see if the label fits my best guess. It usually does. But only a few times I have had to say "...diesel only, diesel only..." and mean it.

Last but not least, I now have two diesel vehicles which makes my decisions much easier. My only gas-eater is the little Honda generator in the garage and it only needs gas about every 3 years.

A little diesel (40:1 ratio) in a gasser can be a good thing. Just add a little diesel every few months because it cleans the fuel injectors. But adding gas to a diesel vehicle is never good.

Well, if the dealer does the work, expect $200-$500. If you don't drive the thing after the gas gets put in, all they have to do is pull the tank, drain it, flush out the line to the fuel filter and refill, and you can escape for the $200 or so, mostly labor and proper disposal of the waste fuel. Since she drove it, they have to flush out everything, and that's what will cost you.

Yes, you can do it yourself and save, but it is a horrible, messy, and even dangerous job (think fire hazard, and what happens if you have a static discharge at the wrong moment).

For what it is worth, the VW TDI forums deal with engines and fueling systems much more like the CRD than do the Powersrtoke guys. The TDI crowd reports ruined injection pumps with substantially less gas than 50%, but even they get by with no damage with lesser amounts somewhere. Still, safest is to "drop and drain" immediately whenever you discover this mistake has been made.

It is probable, since she only drove it 3 miles, and it only sounded rough, rather than dieing outright, that you'll be ok with the flush and refill. The real damage comes when folks try to keep a rough-running diesel going to burn it off when the percentage gas is fairly high, somewhere between 10% and 30% (and no, I'm not going to attempt to find the real boundary between "no problem" and "melt-down.")

The superb mechanic I used for many years (I've since moved 400 miles away, so I don't use him anymore), and one who worked on just about every kind of diesel suggested this procedure if one inadvertently fuels a diesel with gasoline. Let me say right now that I don't recommend this over draining the tank and purging the fuel system of gasoline. My mechanic recommended this option when draining and purging isn't possible. His recommendation was to add about 10% (1 gallon to 10) of motor oil (straight 30W if available) to the tank of fuel. He indicated that this would be enough oil to lower the flash point of the gasoline to near diesel fuel level. He said the engine would probably not run very well, but there would be sufficient lubrication in the fuel to prevent damage to the fuel injection system and allow the gasoline to be burned out of the tank. One caveat: this recommendation was made before diesels were equipped with catalytic converters--I have no idea what this might do to a converter. AS I SAID BEFORE, I DON'T RECOMMEND THIS UNLESS THERE IS NO OTHER ALTERNATIVE AVAILABLE. Thank heavens, I have never "mis-fueled," so I've never had to try this myself, but I know people who have and it has worked for them.

Probably only a good idea on old IDI diesels, especially not High Pressure Common Rails.
