I've driven a fair bit in snow and ice with front and rear drive cars. The Liberty is the first time I've owned a 4wd. I drove it in snow a couple of weeks ago and it was very stable. Overconfidence inspiring kind of stable. I put it back in 2wd for a while just to get a more accurate feel for the road.

We've been getting a lot of snow this year. I got a set of blizzaks just for piece of mind on the long road trips to the coast. The CRD was great in the snow before, but now it's unstoppable. You really need to do something stupid to send it off the road now. I end up getting a lot of people giving me the evil eye, or a flash of their high beams as I pass them by doing my normal speed while everyone else is slow poking it around town.

Skinny winter tires + heavy low torque diesel = great winter vehicle. :)

After last weekend here in the upper midwest, I have to say that hard pack snow, ice, and whiteout conditions had the ability to stop anything.

After the blizzard was over, we traved 15 miles south on the interstate, and we counted 28 autos ditched, half of which were "unstoppable" 4WD. One County Deputy, one tow truck, and four semi-trucks. Several SUV's, two of which were Jeep Liberty's.

I do love my Liberty, but I don't wear a superhero cape, either. My buddy made it to work, but didn't make any more money, or score any more brownie points than I did by staying home. This is a sure footed machine, to be sure, but it doesn't make me invinceable to weather and road conditions. I'm 47, been driving since I was 10, (farm kid), and thoroughly understand how easy it is to underestimate mother natures ability to mess a guy up.

New guy here, but I'm not a new guy, if you know what I mean.....not meaning to ruffle feathers.

First 4x4 I owned was an 84 S10. We were driving from Bend OR to ID to visit relatives at Christmas. Road was completely snow/ice. I kept it around 30 all day and it made for a very long drive. We were passed once that day by two boys in a Toyota 4x4 going about 50. It was about 50 miles to the next turn in the road where we caught up to them. They were both on the ground with sheets covering them. The truck lay upside down a little ways away.

In case anyone missed the main point.....the sheets were not to keep them warm.

I know what you mean...you have to understand the limitations of any machine. In an earlier post I said I thought our Wrangler was better in snow. While it is good in snow I think I had that perception because I generally can go a little faster in my CRD under the same conditions.

I can see that. When I had my '75 CJ5, I had it in 2 spins and was lucky I didn't hit anything and kept it upright. I really think you have to be either stupid, and/or trying to make the KJ spin. My ESP just won't allow it to happen. Common sense make me go slower than needed I think, but that's just not living on the edge.

I saw a similar situation but luckily the two girls survived with just bumps and bruises. It was raining very lightly and they were speeding in a brand new car past me and my wife.....A litttle ways down the road...we say the front end of the brand new car totally destroyed..and both the girls were standing there talking on their cell phones. I always use caution....my biggest concern is control of the vehicle and stopping ability.

We have a 2006 CRD with Blizzaks. With the ESP and snow tires, it does fantastically. In a straight line, it's unstoppable. Around turns, the weight does cause it to push out a little. Its weight gives it good momentum in a straight line through deep rutted snow, but it's not so much of a help in the turns.

"Daddy I need more money, that car you bought me was sooo not good enough... it like totally wrecked and stuff."

"You poor thing... Daddy will buy you an Esclade next time, we can't have my little precious in some unsafe little car."
