I'm definitely holding out. I bought my CRD with a long-term look, and it will have many lives:

1st life (2005): Our "new" car, mommy carries babies in a super safe, all-weather vehicle, keep it stock. Do all service at through a shop, be warry of all recalls
2nd life (2009-10): Warrentee gone so start modding (mild lift), Still family vehicle but more fun. Do my own service, rip out EGR
3rd life (2013): Forget most fussy service, extreme lift, chips, pipes. Off-road beast.
4th life (2018): Put to pasture at my friends paragliding camp, never sees blacktop again, used for hualing pilots up mountains
5th life (2020): Give it to my son to enjoy/destroy as first car/virginity eraser.

finally: (2023) Sell motor on eBay for $75k, last motor with balls left in the country, rest all tiny hybrid-chargers.

I have not seen it, only heard about it, but the father of a friend of mine was telling me about his neighbor's one lung diesel three wheeler that he was using to test his home brewed bio-diesel. I will see if I can get some photos in the future and post them.

Man, this is only like $3k less than my folks paid for their new Limited in July of 2006.

If anyone needs to sell a CRD and the local dealers won't take it -- throw it on Ebay with Biodiesel as one of the keywords. I can almost guarantee someone from Portland or Seattle will snap it up for over the reserve.

I was offered $16K on trade for my '06 CRD Limited w/ 33K miles today. Terrible. I passed. I'll just throw an extended warranty on it and keep it. They gave me a pretty good price on the new car as well so they weren't just moving money around. KBB backs it up. Edmunds still shows a lot more but I think it's unrealistic.

It costs us $3 more a day to drive the CRD vs the 2004 Buick. Ours is basically parked right now. It has become a weekend toy, and a true grocery getter for me, Mr. Mom.

Yeah, I parted with mine for 17k and mine was an 06 limited with 16k on it. The only place to get premium $$ for it is in Cali....but I love my new TDI jetta. My first tank calculation and I averaged 43.76 mpg...and it isn't even broke in yet with only 1,200 miles on it. I was expecting less, but I am very very happy. Of course this wasn't calculated by the trip computer...I did it the paper and pencil way.

It has been about a year since ours had to be in shop for repair of failed whatever, in twice in that amount for recalls. It's never failed to start, smokes the tires when asked to do so, gets 18 mpg put-putting around town. However it's been since last summer that the CRD has been on a real road trip of more then 180 miles so I can't say about the MPG's for highway since we are on ULSD and last tank was still winter fuel.

The problem with buying a 18/26 MPG vehicle when fuel is $1.59 a gallon and enjoying how cheap it was to drive. Now the fun seems to dissappear when it is $2.89 a gallon no matter what the heck you drive, our old MB may become the wife's daily driver because it gets about 30/32 mpg in town driving and 34/36 highway. Currently we are spending about $150 for fuel on the CRD and averaging about $35 on the Magnum each month, but we are not hurting from the dollar amount being spent. However it sure has thrown a wet blanket on road trips for us, and I'm sure for most others here no matter what they drive.

Fuel has been sky high ever since I bought a diesel truck. But does it keep me at home? NO WAY! I use about 40 gallons on a 1000 mile road trip in the CRD, so an extra $40 for a weekend trip doesnt kill me.

If you aren't getting much for it in trade it still maybe cheaper to keep driving the CRD rather than spend more money for a more economical car. If you have to trade for thousands more the payback is going to be a long way out. And if you are upside down as they say (owe more than its worth) the situation gets worse.

Disreguard the above advice if you just want to drive something else and buy what you want. I am sure almost everyone has sold perfectly good cars because they had to have something else. Lets see in my case that would be selling my 350 Nova to get a Challenger, or my Ramcharger to get a Leberon GTS Turbo, or even my 02 gas KJ to get the CRD.

Since we have another dependable car, we chose to stick the $60 a month in our own pockets instead. My wife still drives it during the snow season which is long here at 2 miles up.

Yea, we live at 8000 feet, but my wife drives up to Leadville at 10,200 in elevation everyday. Got any spare oxygen bottles? :D
