Sorry...I'm just feeling a wee bit sassy today. Something about not being very tolerant. :P

Yea, more than likely, the excess oil will go somewhere, in or out. That's kind of why they tell you how much FULL is.

Well, I guess my initial thought was underfilling and not overfilling, remember? I was being cynical because some of your comments imply that our CRD's "magically" correct themselves (probably with "diesel dust")

OK, I lost you there. I thought you were replying about the other thing. The reason why I said all my other issues corrected themselves, is they have. Either with DCX's help with recalls, or my help from wrenching. No magic dust here. sorry. :D

I just make sure mine is at the full mark after its been parked at least overnight, and over the Min line when warm. I dont care how much is in there, DC put the stick there with markings on it, that's what I'm going by, cause sure as there is doo doo in a cat, if I loose my motor and the dealer pulls out the dipstick and sees the oil level at or below min, they will argue to void my warranty...internet arguments of 6L, vs 6.4L, vs 7L of oil dont mean crap then!!! LOL

Sure would. You could prove your case by having them carefully measure 6.4 QUARTS of oil in and show them where that was on the stick. Then, it the difference is say........1 qt from full to min line, you would have that much leeway below the mismarked line.

I don't think anyone is suggesting maintaining an oil level below the min mark are they? The suggestion is possibly maintaining a level somewhere between the max and min and as long as that's being done, there's no warranty issue, right?

Besides, the CRD motor is one of it's strong points; any concerns I have with my CRD do not involve the engine.

Like you, I check my oil level when the engine is dead cold and adjust levels accordingly.

The last 2 oil changes I measured the oil like a mad scientist (without the hump) and with a new oil filter the oil level stabilized at 125 thousands of a inch below the full mark both times. The oil level drops 312.5 ten thousands of an inch in 6k miles, roughly.

How are you even measuring that. Electron microscope?

To measure diesel oil on a dipstick you need a "black light" microscope. 8)

I wish the aftermarket would come out with a dipstick that is more like the Tranny Dipstick...the oil one "probably" changes shape (read length) over time with heat and use (ramming it down to read). I think that this is part of the problem. The "corkscrew" shape is probably not the best...

Could be, but mine has been like that since day one. I made my own "full" mark.
Later when at the dealership, they made me a better line that was easier to see.

Strange, my dip stick does not have a FULL mark on it  Mine says MAX and that is short for MAXIMUM that has an entirely different meaning then full
You could carry a extra quart of oil, take along a dictionary or maybe a lawyer

One thing I know about new car dealers is if they don't want to stand behind something they won't for any reason real or contrived (like crap on cats) They could just as easily say you ran it over full

That's also fine then you tell them there's a design flaw with the CCV that's why you have oil in your intercooler.
