And other than a few engines and the Nitro, what is tying jeep to chysler? Honest question

Maybe one of the other models is built on a shared assembly line with another chrysler product?

Yea, I believ you can still get them overseas (abroad) like down under

Alive and well in Germany. I think it was avalible since 2002 witht he 2.8. I know currently you can get the 2.5 and the 2.8 here. They come with particle filters as well. There is a black Limited 2.5 CRD down the street.

Mine is a Norwegian 2003 CRD;
http://www.krovoll.net/Heldal.jpg

They dont list Cherokee (Liberty in Norway) for 2007, but jeep.se lists 2006 mod 2,8 crd. What is the big change in early and late european 2.8 crd?

The particle filter might be something I must install shortly, if not Norw goverment will charge 50% extra in car tax from me shortly :-((

According to the above site the 6 speed manual CRD in the UK gets to up 36 mpg.

Jeep really messed up in the US not offering the 6 speed manual

VACRD,

In the UK, they measure a gallon by the imperial gallon which is about a quart more than a US gallon. This would work out to be about 29 MPG on the US gallon. The 6 speed sounds pretty good. 8)

Cheers.

M-B could follow a similar path to what Ford did when it bought Land Rover from BMW. Ford bought the 4.4 liter V8 used in the Gen III Range Rover for 2003-2004 and then started installed the Jaguar AJ-V8 (modified for RR use) in 2005.

M-B could give the Liberty a bored out iron block version of its corporate 3.5 liter V6 (maybe at 3.7 to 4.0 liters) and leverage either a VM diesel engine or one of its own excellent diesels.

Alive and well in South Africa. Jeep Cherokee '07 available here with an improved service warranty increased from 60 000km / 3 yrs up to 100 000kms / 3 yrs . Two price increases since Early '05 when the 2.8 CRD was first introduced to S.A. See plenty on and off road.

There is no D/B anymore, MB ownes DD. D/C owns MB and Chrysler and everything else down the ladder, what is funny is Pensky Racing owns the rest of VM Motorie.

Man when you do a owner check of these conglomerates the %'s, and sometimes owners, change every quarter.

I think the stock we get here originates from different sources . Some stock comes from Canada and probably some from Europe and we get the 6 speed manual as well as auto. To answer your question, prairiedog , I think the auto's are the same transmission as I have heard about recalls on the TC etc .. I drive the manual 6 speed and thank God by the sounds of it ! I had a loan vehicle from service centre that was an auto , I got about two blocks downthe road and it had already started bucking on me .

I've just bought a new Cherokee (Liberty) CRD here in Australia - the build date was Jan 2006. 6 speed manual. It's replacing my 2002 manual CRD because I need the extra torque to tow my new camper trailer.

As far as I know Jeeps will still be offered with the CRD over here.

In North America, the Liberty CRD is the only diesel vehicle in it's class, without question. The Grand Cherokee will be the DC version of the VW V10 TDI Toureg, which was a ridiculously overpriced vehicle. The only vehicles that will come close to the Lib CRD will be the 3.0 V6 CRD in the Grand Cherokee and the 2.5L V6 TDI in the Toureg (in '08)...and both of these are aimed at the higher-niche market as diesel variants of the 5.7 Hemi-powered GC/W8-powered Touregs.

I'd almost kill for a 6-speed in my CRD. I drove a 5-speed 4.2TD Land Cruiser overseas for quite some time and loved driving a stick...I'm still sadenned by the auto-only option for the Libby, but it was the only vehicle to be off-roadable and tow trailers, etc... CR-V, RAV4, Escapes don't even come close to the Liberty.

Does the 6-speed console look similar to the RFE-545's console....you never know if some one in Europe racks of a 2.8 CRD 6-speed badly enough without damaging the tranny...

Cheers,
Duey

This thread kind of got hijacked since I first read it a little while back. Is the CRD a cult car? I think so, it was only built for two years with approximately 14,000 cars produced. The thing that makes it a cult car is the engine. Even though it has issues, the cult that will follow after these little CRD's will look past all of it's issues. Much like people did with the '80-81 IH Scout Diesels, and the GM 5.7 diesels of the early 80's. Yes the GM 5.7 diesel has a cult following. I have another little cult vehicle, An '85 Mitsubishi 4x4 diesel Pickup. It was the first turbo diesel pickup in the USA and one in great condition like mine will still fetch $10,000. The Libby it self has a cult following and that is the reason that this board is so successful. I don't see boards out there for the Honda CRV, Ford Escape, or Toyota RAV4. We are passionate about our Liberties and the CRD is the cream of the crop. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/565119

Since I started this treat several weeks ago I made some of the mods recommended on this board and also added a AeroTurbine 2525 muffler.

My CRD is running almost like new and I am getting 4 to 5 MPG more in my last three tanks. From 23/24 to 27/29.

There is nothing on the road that you can buy that gets this kind of mileage, can tow as much, and go off road - period.

I think I am over my initial fear of having major issues, even though I did have a service problem during regular maintenance. I still have a 85,000 warranty and am covered for that.

I am actually planning my mods once it gets off of warranty.

I do not see anybody coming out with something like the CRD for a long time and fully expect 7 to 10 years from now to still own the CRD and that it will be a cult car.

I'm happier to have this as a cult car than my '75 Pacer...

VACRD, I think that everything you and Spencevans mention confirm that the CRD Liberty will become a cult classic!

Cheers,

It's good to hear that you are loving your CRD. I love my CRD and I have made a commitment to see it through it's short comings. It has never left me stranded or even went into limp mode but it has ben in the shop more than it should be.

Can it's good qualities be repalaced?

Not easily, because the CRD is unique.

Well good luck.

I'd like to chime in on the cult car issue.

I do see it as a type of "cult car" in a positive way. At least for the next few years as long as fuel prices stay high [remember when home fuel oil dropped to under 70 cents a gallon back in 94-95??] and there are those of use who are willing to drive an oil burner - ala canola oil that is.

The body styling is definitely there for a cult car following. And as long as the VM 2.8 does not have any inherent time bomb reliability issues [based on its use elsewhere in other applications I doubt it does] we all might look like geniuses for buying the thing especially if fuel keeps going up.

When I can get it away from my wife, I drive it - hard, like I stole it. If I break a TC I want it to be within the 3/36 warranty. On a recent trip on the highway I bumped up into the "detuning" issue that mine must have. No shuddering but the Libby UP-shifted at 60 mph/3000 rpms when I was still WOT. Huummm.. there it went shifting away and the rpms going DOWN! It still accelerated to 100mph although not as fast as if it wouldn't have shifted. It took just long enough to get to that speed that as soon as I got there I had to back off because of coming up on traffic ahead of me. At that speed, I was about 1/2 throttle and speed was still climbing slowly. I don't know if the vehicle is speed governed but a short wheel based vehicle going that fast - and the fact it is a DCX product made me nervous.

So, I will keep her with all the shortcomings - although I must say we have driven 3K miles since we got Libby in January and besides a tire pressure warning light......... no issues. I am getting ready to do my first oil change and will send an oil sample to get a baseline.

Dad
