EDIT After surfing for about a hour I was unable to find filter listings by size WIX has our filter's size as 11.450 inches long, 8.280 inches wide and 1.60 inches deep. I then went out and measured my airbox and compared it to the 1.6 inch high and found that we could maybe go close to 2 inches but not more Could a filter of different material, not oiled, be a better solution then stock

Could we get the OEM filter MATERIAL, and make our own using BIGGER PLEATS and putting it in a stock frame? Is that just too annoyingly simple?

Nope, simple is good, definitely believe in the KISS principle.

Picked up a copy of Diesel Power last night, had an ad for AEM's Workhorse HD diesel filters in it, gave the dimensions for one. 9" tall and 10" diameter, 28" circumference.

We need a bigger boat, but not a Nimitz class carrier!

Did a little digging on AEM's website. In the FAQ section for the dryflow filters, they said in April they will start making OE Replacement panel Dryflow filters, that you can use in the stock airbox.

AFE, who makes the Proguard 7 filter, is coming out with their own dry synthetic filter, called the ProDry, and will also be offering it in OE panel style.

Also went to the S&B Filters website, and used the "Build your own Filter" section. Submitted a request for a panel filter with 1/2" longer pleats than we now have, and also used their contact page to tell them I was looking for a filter with at least 400 cfm air flow.

Might be all we need to do is wait another month or two, and our bigger boat may come in on it's own.

Wait, wait, they do oil filters. Wasn't the general consensus that oil filters are a no-no? Or was that only if we cared about our MAF....which I no longer do!!!!

The last paper filter I bought was a NAPA Gold, looked like a lot more pleats and the pleats were slightly longer. That filter went bye-bye with the Jeep. I still have the Truflow on the shelf.

As I understand it, the new Airflow snorkel is to come in two types. The first one uses the stock airbox. This is complete and you can order it now. Unfortunately, that does not help us much, as the same airflow restrictions apply when not moving, as it uses the stock box and filter.

At higher speeds, the ram air induction is supposed to improve the airflow over the stock gasser box. I tend to think that the CRD airbox front end was designed along the same lines-- the direct ram intake into the box helps improve airflow when the vehicle is moving. The side effect of this ram induction being water in the filter when it is raining. If this is true, you may get less of a real world performance benefit from aftermarket intakes. That is, the RAM air effect may push more airflow than what the specs you are quoting state, as the specs may have been measured at a standstill with no airflow over the vehicle..

The second snorkel option uses a Donaldson Airfilter that would have its own assembly and sits outside the vehicle (as not enough room inside) with the external snorkel assembly. That should free up the space under the hood and allow plenty of airflow. I don't know if it is still under consideration or not.

I figured I'd contact these guys just to see how much of a PITA it would be to get a higher flow filter designed for the stock air box, and also get some input from them on just what size of conical cold intake filter it would take to get at least max rated airflow for the engine, 400 cfm. We'd at least have some info to work with.

I'll give S&B this, they had the sections on their website where you could design your own filter and request a quote on how much it would cost, and a contact section where you could actually describe to them what you're looking for, not just a phone number and e-mail address.

We're learning how to improve this little torque monster, and hopefully one day make it the envy of the Jeep community, despite all the inherent faults that DC's bean counters put into it.

DC may have given me something of a lemon to begin with, but I like that tight little diesel enough I'm going to give it a fair try making lemonade.

Seriously, imagine this thing with proper airflow and an off-road mod. First, the engine will last forever with no EGR problems, and it will have serious power. Makes the $18k these '05s are going for look like a steal. Its going to be one of those great sleeper cars people will be hunting for if they are in the know.


Hmm, speaking of which, I am shopping for a replacement for my smashed Jetta......could I dream of 2 CRDs in the driveway?.....
