Found 4 brands that have an oil filter with a p/n specifically for the CRD. I went by the auto parts store and physically compared them with a spare Mopar filter I purchased from the dealer.

Except for the Mobil 1 which wasn't stocked yet, they were physically identical in layout and construction with the "Made in Italy" Mopar filter.

Mobil 1 - M1-211, Purolator - L25230 and PL25230, STP - S8316, Fram - 8316.

Good deal, thanks. Same part numbers on mine. I've got free oil changes for 100K miles. I just wanted to make sure the right oil is going in!

I've been getting oil changes for my wifes '05 CRD at a local dealer (Dwayne Lane's in Everett, WA) for 19.95...

The part numbers are: 5003558AA and 5127394AA, so hopefully it's the right stuff. :!: [/code]

If it is the right stuff then they are loosing money on that $19.95 oil change. The cheapest oil you can buy at Wal*Mart is the Shell Rotella and it's $14 for a gallon jug (about 4 quarts) so you need two at $28 and the Mopar oil filter is $12 but I get mine at NAPA and it's still $6.

I did notice something interesting yesterday though. Wal*Mart was selling the Mobil 1 5W40 that the owner's manual recommends for $5.16/qt. O'reilly Auto Parts was selling the same oil for $4.99/qt.! That's unusual to see a store like that beat Wal*Mart in price!

8 mm hex head is the correct size socket for the drain plug if I understand correctly.
What size drive are you using with this socket? I was looking for a socket for a 1/2" drive and could only find one for a 3/8" drive.
I know I can use an adapter, but I'm curious as to what y'all are using.

Using the 3/8" drive socket, with a 3/8" to 1/2" adapter, with a 1/2" drive 150 ft/lb balance beam torque wrench. Popped that puppy out of there with no problem. :)

Getting ready to change my oil for the first time next week. Stopped in the dealer, Adam's in Aberdeen, MD, and picked up an oil filter. While there they tried to sell me the Mobil 1 0W-40, at which time I told them I had already purchased it. When, in fact, I purchased Mobil1 Truck and SUV oil. Nothing like trying to "up sell" me.

Did my first oil change today. Man was that some nasty oil, gonna get a box of latex gloves for next time. Took a bit of hammering to lossen the oil plug at first, and I think I could have taken the oil filter off without the wrench. Other than that went very well, switched over the Mobil 1 Truck and SUV oil. When I picked up an oil filter at the dealer they gave me the "you know that takes special oil" bit, and I gave them the "yeah I already have it." If I remember correctly the 2006s arn't spec'd for the 0W-40. I guess it took me about 2 hours to get my oil changed, being the first time I expected some hiccups. Like when I spent 20 minutes looking for the oil plug and I ended up dropping it in the drain pan. (I hate that!!) Hopefully next time will be 30 minutes or so, except that will be in the middle of February.

My CRD seemed to be using oil so I had the stealership change the oil when I ask them how much it would set me back they told me $25. I was like sweet. It was alot cheaper than I had expected. So when I go back to get my CRD they try to charge me $68.35, and I was like wait a min. they said that they had already given me $20 off because of the misquote and showed me that they normal charge $88.35. I talked to the GM and got that oil change at $25, but that won't happen again. lol I intend to go to Walls of China Mart and get the Rotella T 5w/40 and go to advance and get a Mobil 1 oil filter, I have had good luck with them on gassers.

Another filter to try is Fleetguard, available at Cummins dealers. A friend in Wyoming has an '04 Dodge Cummins Quad Cab, has always used Fleetguard filters on it. When i was out there in August, we pulled into a station to fuel up and he checked the oil. He showed me the dipstick, and the oil looked like he'd just changed it in the last few days. He told me that oil had been in the engine for over 4000 miles. From what i gathered, the Fleetguard filter for his Dodge ran around 6 or 7 bucks.

He also owns an '05 Sport CRD, and that's one thing he's complained about - while the oil in the Cummins will stay clean for 4000 miles, with the CRD you drive around the block and the stuff turns black, as he put it.

I went to the Wix website, found the number for their oil filter for the CRD, then went to the Fleetguard website, and the Wix number cross-referenced to a Fleetguard filter. The Fleetguard P/N is LF3339.

I don't know about the Wix filter. Besides fitting the CRD, it's also listed as fitting Ford/Mercury gas cars made from '81 thru '04. In other words, this just might be a generic gas car filter they've already been making for 20 years, that just happened to be the right size and thread pattern to fit the CRD. Filtration was listed as 20 microns, nothing outstanding there.

I'm going back to the Fleetguard website and try crossing the Mopar filter number and see what happens.

Same here with my Powerstroke. The oil in the Ford at 5,000 miles is cleaner than the oil in the CRD at 5 miles. I use Amsoil HDD 5W-30 in both and Amsoil SDF-34 oil filter in the CRD.
