Nothing pisses me off more than the darn fuel doors you have to pull the release to open. I guess for some folks who live in high crime areas, they are a good deterrent, but any 10 year old with a popsicle stick could get it off. Same goes with locking fuel caps. Give me a crow bar and I'll have that sucker off.

Locks keep honest people honest...other than that, they just frustrate their owners. LOL! :)

I helped a friend move from virginia to tacoma washington in a U-haul a couple years ago. After we got to Tacoma, we were taking it to the gas station to put the fuel back to the level when they gave us the truck... Put the nozzle in and set it open... It looked like a waterfall coming out the back below the bumper. Somebody cut the line under the truck and just drained the thing over night. I guess we got to the station on whatever was left in the system.

you know, its a funny thing that this thread is here... it just happened to me yesterday at the lake. Dropped the Bayliner in the water, parked the Jeep with 1/4 tank left, spent 6 hours on the lake and jump back in the jeep back it down the ramp then i hear the "DING!" I'm looking at my dash... and cannot believe that its my fuel light that just came on... i get the boat back out of the water and get the Jeep back on level ground... sure enough, I'm below "E" I some how get to the fuel station 2 miles up the road pulling a Bayliner.... i end up topping off with 20.2 gal of fuel.... I was really hoping to see a car broke down on the side of the road looking at the motor, as WVO smoke poured out the tail pipe... but no luck..... maybe they put it in a boat.... i don't know... id like to think that it was a gasser

how sure are you someone stole some gas vs just forgot?

Im not doubting your sanity, I just know that if I had 1/4 tank when I get there, and then then empty when I got back in, I would be scratchin my head trying to figure out if I had really had that much gas, specially if I had just spent 6 hours on the lake.....probably after consuming beer for 6 hours too.

well, it was the first run for the boat for the year, I drained the fuel that had been sitting in it, put 5 gal of gas and a can of B-12 chemtool in the tank... drove to the last gas stop (12 miles from the house) pulled up to the diesel pump (out of habbit) filled the boat up with 16 gal (of Gas) then checked my fuel gauge/miles being that i was at the pump anyway, and saw that i had 315 miles on the ODO and 1/4 of fuel, Fig i had enough to go one mile to the boat dock, 13 miles back home and then was going to fill er up on my home made bio...

I filled er up and did the math...14.2 MPG!!! I was indeed missing fuel....

ok gotcha, I just know had I not taken exact note of something like that note I woulda been scratchin my head doubting my sanity.

thats quite annoying then, I hope they put it into their car, their friends car, and it all caused them problems. Though I suspect that if you got hit someone did it because they wanted the diesel, how conspicious is your biodiesel sticker?

I do like the idea of having a locking fuel door, ya someone can just pry it open, but the maint point is to make yourself less of a target, if you can make it such that its easyer to go onto the next person thats more likely to happen.

Now if someone is ready to rip open my gas door I would rather have a locking cap, so at least they dont smash up my vehicle stealing the gas. On my 300zx it has a latching fuel door, then a PO put a locking gas cap on it. That thing was the biggest pain in the stupid. Got rid of it right away. Not only was it a pain to use to lock and unlock, but it was also behind a latched fuel door, i ended up leaving it unlocked, even then though it was a pain because you had to push the key in to relieve pressure before you could unscrew it.

I do like the idea of a locking cap over fuel door, at least your fuel door wont get ripped open that way, they still might just smash the cap...but atleast they wont smash the fender.

Ideally you would have a locking cap that is easy for you to open, but not someone else, ie a combo, thing is to have a bunch of digits to make it secure from a random number standpoint would make it hard for you to always open quickly, not to mention if you couldnt see in the dark it would be hard too.

Imagine this if you will, Ive seen a few locks like it, but a couple of push buttons for a lock......

Remember the "simon says" little electronic game disk? Imagine if your gas cap has 4 large colored buttons on it, you have a 4/5? "digit" code for it. so you go out, buy it, and it comes with a code(I cant think of a way to make it "programmable"), so you get out, open your fuel door, and then punch in your code. Red, red, blue, yellow. Or whatever, and the you can unscrew it.

Hmmmm, I like that idea.....no one take it, patent pending patent pending!

4 "digits" would give you 256 combos possible, 5 would give you 1024 possiblities, just enough that it would take a long time to get it randomly.

Plus colors would be easy to see, easy to push, and easy to remember

That might work too, just confuse people so much that they cant get it off! though I think you would need to put a different fill nozzle in, which would be costly and specific to each vehicle. you might be able to make an insert that went into the RH threads, and then you screwed your cap into that.

It would need to be pretty slim though so that you could still get the nozzle in it.........good idea though.

How about a simple sticker that says something like:

WARNING: ELECTRONIC SURVAILANCE
SYSTEM PHOTOGRAPHS ALL PERSONS
NEAR THIS VEHICLE.

Like someone else mentioned, I'm less worried about someone stealing fuel and more worried about someone putting crap in my tank. I had a Dodge Dakota that someone thought it would be cute to pour sugar in. Luckily, they left the bag behind and it was sticking out of the fuel door ever so slightly, and I noticed it before starting it. I didn't even have to pull the tank, because all of the sugar was in the fuel supply tube.

Anyway, my thinking is if some kids are pulling pranks they are likely to move to the next vehicle if they find one with a locked cap.
