Fly fishing, Montana's Mecca for most fly fisherman. The Madison, Smith, Gallatin, Missouri, Stillwater, Yellowstone, Gibbon, Firehole, Et. Al. You can also go west across Glacier Park and fish the Flathead river(s). Folks spend days drift fishing pretty much all the way down to Missoula.

I knew that there had to be some other "real" men here who are interested in something other than motor oil

OK fly fishing. Hey I fish and what ever works works. I fish for food and relaxation. I hunt the same way. Farm the same way. Unfortunately I have done none in the past 20 years. Well except fishing. Still looking at houses in and around Havre, it seems to be th echeapest place. Looks like lake property is out of the question, cheapest we could find was $1M plus. I am still hopeful we can find something between 100-500 acres away from everything. I will have to buy 2 Mustangs once we get a house. One for the property and one for the garage, package deal. We might just get property and then look at building a log home later. Maybe get a mobile home to start out with. Find a kit log home and build it ourselves. Too bad we can't find the log home floor plan we like. We have been talking about just making our own floor plan and going with it.

Anyhow:

1. Should I invest in bumpers and grill guard for the KJ? Deer, Elk, Moose etc

2. Lights, I have 2 sets now but wold like to add another set facing to the rear. Is more better there? Eventually converting to HID 8".

3. Grill cover for the winter, there is a post about it here.

4. What is most heating there Gas or oil or electric?

5. Power outage, should I look for a 10-18K generater also?

6. Is Havre prone to flooding or flash flooding? I am still looking on the NOAA site for this info.

7. Hunting right of ways, if it is my privat eproperty.

You have to fry trout in 5w40. 0w40 is way too thin. :P Not a true, trout rated oil.

I practice catch and release so I don't worry about the frying oil, but did note that the goop from the MAP sensor makes a good top dressing to get Hellgamite flies the right color

You can trust the fresh Road Kill, or what ever you hunt yourself, but when you out to eat, get a recommendation from a local before eating at any Mom & Pop Restaurants. I had a job in Glacier National Park and did not ask where it was safe to eat, I was so sick from food poisoning that I could not get out of the hotel bathroom to catch my flight the next morning. This is good advice for any place not just the Glacier National Park area.

Regards,

Steve

PS Don't get any pebbles caught in your tire treads when in GNP, they may think you are steeling rocks.

I have been eating army food and deployments to Bosnia, Kosovo and Iraq so I think my stomach of steel will be fine. But I will be cautious of watching mom and pop making my lunch.

Eating at Mom & Pop's is the only way to go, same as staying at small hotels, good judgement prevails, if it doesn't look good or smell good pass. My stomach is cast iron, military service will serve as the ultimate teacher. I judge a place by the parking lot, if the ranchers and farmers pickups are in the lot or in front, that is the place I want to eat. Montana is no exception. They have a restaurant in McLeod< Mt. called the Road Kill Cafe, there motto is "From your Grill To Ours", great food and beverages, very family oriented, caters to locals, Dude ranchers, and anyone who happens by.

Full parking lots are not always the best sign to use, the Mom & Pop place south of Glacier National Park was full and they were friendly. People build immunity to food poisoning just like I have built up immunity to the bugs at waste water plants, I still catch colds. It is best to ask and look them in the eye. The worst thing that can happen is that the Biodiesel (caused by improper deep fat frying) ends up on your plate instead of your tank. Or you get a load of Transfat that loads up your pipes (intestines) and the sewer pipes. At least with our Liberty CRDs the transfat blows out the tail pipe and covers the shoulder of the road so there is more Road Kill for the Road Kill Grill.

Steve  ,

Ponderosa in Big rapids, MI has a full lot, but I don't eat there any more.

Try the Corps of Engineers for flooding information.
